  1. IETF Liaison Report to T11 David L. Black August 10, 2006 06-615v0

  2. IETF Working Groups • IP Storage Working Group (ips WG) • FCIP, iFCP, iSCSI, iSNS and related protocols • Plus management MIBs for these protocols • Internet and Management Support for Storage (imss) WG • IP over Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel MIBs • Pseudo-wire emulation edge-to-edge (pwe3) WG • Link-layer protocol encapsulation, primarily over MPLS. • Fibre Channel over Pseudo-wire (joint w/FC-BB-4) • David Black is chair of the ips and imss WGs. 06-615v0

  3. Recent News • IKEv2 parameter values for FC-SP • IANA previously allocated values for FC-SP • Usage specification published as RFC 4595 • FC PW Congestion control responsibility • Fibre Channel Pseudo-Wire (BB-4/pwe3) • IETF will handle TCP-class congestion control • IETF pwe3 WG now working on congestion control for pseudo-wires in general 06-615v0

  4. IP Storage WG Status (1) • iSNS MIB Expert Review (MIB Doctor) • Review complete, draft being revised • iSCSI Implementation identification • iSCSI key to report what is running at peer • Vendor, software/firmware versions, etc. • Will move to Working Group Last Call soon 06-615v0

  5. IP Storage WG Status (2) • Working group last call completed: • iSER (iSCSI Extensions for RDMA) • DA (Datamover Architecture for iSCSI). • Waiting for approval of underlying RDDP protocols (starting to happen) • iSCSI Implementers Guide • Capture iSCSI implementation experience • Will be open for contributions during 2006 06-615v0

  6. IMSS WG Status • Three MIBs approved as new work items • RSCN, Fabric Configuration Server, Zone Server MIBs • Possibility of new MIB development model • Can MIB development move entirely into T11? • Model used for Ethernet MIBs in IEEE 802 • IETF expert review to support transition • T11.5 Management ad-hoc discussion of model • MIB Doctor Expert Review should stay in IETF, period. • Result: structural impacts on T11-IETF relationship • Will be discussed with responsible IETF Area Director 06-615v0

  7. Fibre Channel over Pseudo-Wire • draft-ietf-pwe3-fc-encap-01.txt • FC traffic encapsulation in packets for MPLS • Protocol will be joint IETF/FC-BB-4 work. • Analogous to FCIP development (with FC-BB-3) • Liaison issue resolved: Congestion control • Fibre Channel has no (TCP-class) congestion control. • Specification of TCP-class congestion control for the FC PW will done in IETF as opposed to in T11. • IETF pwe3 WG is working on congestion control for pseudo-wires in general 06-615v0

  8. FC Addresses in ELS payloads • FC-IFR uses address translation • S_ID and D_ID change across fabrics • iFCP also uses address translation • Separate FC domain at each gateways • Some ELSs have embedded addresses • Translating them is a problem • Work underway to reduce this problem • This work should be applied to iFCP • Remove ELS address translation details from iFCP RFC • T11 should specify (and maintain) ELS address translation 06-615v0

  9. Next IETF Meeting • The next IETF meeting will be held during the week of November 6th inSan Diego, California. 06-615v0
