  2. What People Say about Worship Worship is purely an emotional experience which makes you feel good and gives you a spiritual high. Worship is a repetitive ritual that you go through without feelings or sometimes even understanding what you are doing. Others say that everything you do in life is worship. What does the Bible teach? (Acts 17:11)

  3. Jesus Teaches Us What Worship Is Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. "You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:21-24)

Worship Requires the Right Object The devil wanted Jesus to worship him, but Jesus said it was only right to worship God (Lk. 4:8) The word for worship (proskuneo) means “to kiss, fawn, crouch to (literally or figuratively); prostrate oneself in homage, (do reverence to, adore)” (Strong’s Greek Dictionary). We are not to worship man like the Pope of Rome (Peter refused the worship of Cornelius) (Acts 10:25) We are not to worship creation, (sun, moon, stars, or the earth) but only the Creator. (Deut. 17:2-6; Romans 1:25)

  5. Worship Requires the Right Object We are not to worship angels. (Colossians 2:18; Rev. 22:8-9) We are not to worship idols (people, things, or money) (1 Cor. 10:7; Eph. 5:5; Mt. 6:24) We are not to worship false gods or goddesses Zeus and Hermes- Acts 14:12 Diana- Acts 19:27, 35 Allah- god of the Muslims Buddha- god of the Hindus Only the God of heaven and Jesus, the Son of God, are worthy to be worshipped.

  6. Worship Requires the Right Spirit The most important command is to love God with all of our being (Matthew 22:37-38). The 3,000 Jews who were converted to Christ were enthusiastically involved in worship. (Acts 2:42, 46) Paul warned the brethren at Corinth that if they did not partake of the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner- they were guilty of the body and blood of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:27ff). If we come and worship but our heart is not in it, our worship is in vain (Matthew 15:8-9).

Worship Must Be Done in Truth It isn’t a matter of what I desire or what I think will please God, but we must submit to dowhat He desires since His thoughts and ways are much higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). God wants us to pray, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, cheerfully give as we have been prospered, remember the Lord’s death until He comes back, and study from His word so that we will become more like Christ. (Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2; Eph. 5:19)

Worship Must Be Done in Truth Therefore ... we do not to pray to Mary. ….we don’t add instruments to worship or offer entertainment. ….we don’t have a raffle, garage sale, or car wash to raise funds for the church. ….we don’t preach to make people feel good or what people want to hear but what they need to hear for their spiritual good. (2 Timothy 4:2-4) Whatever we do in worship, we must have book, chapter, and verse for what we practice if we want to please the Lord (Colossians 3:17).

  9. Everything We Do is Not Worship There is a difference between worship and service. We gather together to honor and praise God in worship which cannot be done at home, or observing nature, or when we are fulfilling responsibilities to the government, our job, our spouse, children, the needy, etc. (Genesis 22:5; Hebrews 10:23-25) We render service to God when we obey Him in our everyday lives with our words and deeds (Ephesians 4:12; 5:22ff; 6:1ff) Part of our service to God our worship to Him, but all service is not worship.

  10. Conclusion Worship requires the right object (the God of heaven and Jesus Christ), the right spirit, and must be done in accordance with God’s word. Our worship is not just a matter of feeling good, going through a repetitive ritual, or a common thing but realizing that we are praising and honoring the God who created us in His image and sent His Son to die for our sins! Our worship is in vain, if we have not worshiped God with the proper attitude or if it is not in accordance with God’s will.

  11. Conclusion To be a true worshiper of God, you must hear, believe, and have been baptized in obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Acts 2:37-38; 18:8; 22:16) Have you done that from the heart? This morning, have you truly worshiped God in spirit and in truth? (John 4:23-24)
