Why Are We Here? • To discuss post high school options: 4 yr college or university 2 yr college - Community College Technical college/school Military / Work • 12 Months from now you should be nearly done with all college applications! • To discuss your academic plans prior to registering for your classes for senior year.   6. Admission Requirements: • Colleges vary in what they require depending on how selective they are • All colleges will consider: • GPA • ACT/SAT scores • High school curriculum (your transcript) Parkway South High Counseling Department

Campus Visits • Tour the campus and town • Meet with an admission rep on campus • Verify admission requirements • Consider type of school and degrees offered • Ask about scholarship / financial aid opportunities • Attend a class to get an idea of academic atmosphere • Visit dorms, dining halls, library, etc. • Campus activities • Ask about Academic Support Services • Talk to students / faculty Parkway South High Counseling Department

College Visits • Colleges come to South High to visit students who are interested in learning information about that school. • Helps you learn more about the school and helps the admission representatives get to know you. • Admission representatives have first hand information about the college life and opportunities. • Junior year is the perfect time to visit with college representatives.   11. College Admission Exams: ACT/SAT These tests are given several times a year on Saturdays. You can register at actstudent.org The ACT is offered 7 times each year and is always offered at Parkway South – All Juniors will take this test on Tuesday April 2nd during school hours. (no need to register for this test) The SAT is offered 8 times each year and is offered at a few local high schools but never at Parkway South. Students need to sign up for these Saturday tests on-line at least 4-5 weeks prior to the date of the test. Parkway South High Counseling Department

  16. College Admission Exams: ACT/SAT Colleges use these scores for admission and scholarship consideration. You may take both tests as many times as you choose. Colleges will take your highest score into consideration. Don’t forget! Scores can be sent directly to 4 colleges for free when you register. Many colleges are no longer accepting ACT scores sent from high schools, therefore, you will need to request an ACT score report to be sent directly from ACT to the college of your choice. Community College Option St. Louis Community College – 4 campuses www.stlcc.edu Program Offerings: • Associate Degrees – 2 year degrees or credits to transfer to a 4 year school. • Certificates of Proficiency – i.e. Dental Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding. Special Considerations • Student athletes: • All NCAA Division 1 and 2 athletes must register at www.eligibilitycenter.org • All NAIA athletes must register at www.playnaia.org • Any questions see the Athletic Director Pat Burns • Students with an IEP or 504 Plan: • Talk with your case manager about ACT accommodations if applicable. • Ask potential colleges about disability support services available. • International Students: • Speak with admission representatives about your visa status and how this affects financial aid and loans. A+ Program • Students who enroll and meet all requirements will be eligible to attend a Missouri community college or vocational/technical school for up to two years free. • Students are eligible to access the A+ funds for 4 years after their graduation date.  • Many other Missouri post-secondary institutions also offer financial incentives. • For more information: • contact our A+ coordinator Mr. Roach Room 918 or during 4th and 6th block in room 1411(Room by the vending machines below counseling) • or visit www.parkwayschools.net and click the A+ tab on the home page. • Deadline to sign up: October 1st your senior year. Financial Aid / Scholarships • Scholarships – Most scholarships are not awarded until a student has been accepted to college (Dec 1 – continuing thru April 2017) • Scholarships Reward: academic performance, athletic performance, other exceptional skill or talents, financial need, community affiliations, minority status, etc. • Sources: Direct from the college, civic organizations, private foundations and charities, religious groups, parent employer etc. • How to find: Parkway South website, fastweb.com, other on-line sources. • Financial Aid night at PSH during fall each year.   22. College Credit • Advanced Placement (AP) – College Credit issued based on a national test given in May. Each college has their own required score for issuing credit. Scores range from 1-5. Not all colleges accept AP credit, so do your research! • Dual Credit (3.0 GPA) college credit through local university systems on South High campus. (Separate transcripts needed) • Dual Enrollment (3.0 GPA) Maintain enrollment at South High and enroll / travel to a local community college or university. Parkway South High Counseling Department

When registering for classes next year…. • Ask yourself the following questions: • Do my class choices reflect my career interests/goals? • Am I successfully reaching my personal and academic goals? • Do I have enough credits to graduate on time? It is your responsibility to know your credit standing. • Are there any classes I need to sign up in summer school for credit recovery? • Have I met with my counselor to discuss credits? • At the end of this workshop there will be some time to meet with your counselor to ask questions.
