  2. What is FIMRC? FIMRC is a 501(c)(3) global non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of children around the world by providing both direct and indirect medical support.

  3. FIMRC’s Vision and Mission • Our VisionA world in which all children have an equal opportunity to benefit from modern medicine. • Our MissionTo provide access to medical care for the millions of underprivileged and medically underserved children around the world.

  4. How Does It Accomplish Its Mission? • Establishment of Clinics in Underserved RegionsThis includes staffing the clinic with local physicians and nurses, sponsoring volunteers at our global health sites, and raising funds for medical equipment and supplies. • Expanding its Partners in HealthFIMRC has established partnerships with 15 global health organizations. They enable it to provide health services to a wider population, and offer a unique learning opportunity for Global Health Volunteers.

Why Join A FIMRC Chapter? • Global Health Volunteer Program (GHVP)On site volunteers support clinical projects and teach workshops on a range of health topics. • Chapter Community ActivitiesMainly health-related, they give students a chance to promote FIMRC’s mission and network in the health field. • Mentorship/InternshipsSenior staff have expertise in areas of international health, public policy, medicine, and biotechnology.

Global Health Programs • Project Limon, Nicaragua • Through a partnership with the Roberto Clemente Rancho Santana clinic, FIMRC’s Project Limon brings medical care to children living in remote areas of rural western Nicaragua. By placing volunteers to work alongside the doctors, nurses, and other medical staff in the clinic, FIMRC aims to improve pediatric care in the region and improve the lives of Nicaragua’s children.

Global Health Programs • Alajuelita, Costa RicaProject San Felipe, Alajuelita, Costa Rica: FIMRC established a new clinic in San Felipe, Alajuelita in 2005, which serves Nicaraguan immigrants and impoverished Costa Rican citizens. FIMRC is implementing biannual child wellness check-ups for the entire community, an extensive medical charting system, health education workshops, and nutritional programs.

  10. Global Health Programs • Project Las Delicias, El SalvadorJust outside of El Salvador’s capital city lies Las Delicias, an underserved community of approximately 5,000 people. Since 2007, FIMRC has provided primary medical care to the community’s children and families and have pioneered health education and outreach initiatives, including a groundbreaking Micro Health Insurance Program.

Global Health Programs • Project Peru • Peru’s medical facilities are critically understaffed and underfunded, and many medical establishments struggle to provide even basic medical care to the people they serve. The hospitals are overburdened with patients, many of whom have illnesses preventable by basic hygiene and healthy living practices. The doctors in these hospitals lack the time and resources to teach each patient how to live a healthy life. The central goal of FIMRC’s Peru program is to provide staff support to Peru’s Ministry of Health both in medical facilities and within the community.

Global Health Programs • Africa – FIMRC Clinic Project Bumwalukani, Uganda: Through a partnership with the Arlington Academy of Hope (AAH), this project provides direct healthcare in a clinic setting to a community of approximately 10,000 individuals in rural Uganda. This is the only health facility in the village of Bumwalukani.

Global Health Programs • Southeast Asia – Health Education ProgramsProject Kodaikanal, India: Through a partnership with The Betsy Elizabeth Trust, FIMRC’s Project Kodaikanal provides health education and primary healthcare to 150 children living in the poverty-stricken community of Kodaikanal, a town located in the hills of Tamil Nadu, India.

  15. Future Direction FIMRC is poised to make significant changes in the global community during the next few years. With the support of its partners, FIMRC is on course to achieve its goals of expanding the GHVP to the following countries: Haiti, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Philippines, and Senegal; opening three new clinics; initiating an epidemiological research program in each clinic; and developing long-term partnerships with university medical residency programs.

  18. Estimated Cost of Trip cont. Participants have to be willing/able to pay for entire trip expense (~$1700) to be considered for a spot. -that being said, we will try to provide several fundraising opportunities to help lower the cost.

Safety, Safety, Safety! • Medical/Disaster Evacuation Insurance is required • Can be purchased through STA at the office of International Education in Carrington 2nd floor. • $22 • This covers much more than emergency evac. • Safety is our NUMBER 1 concern! • i.   22. Logistics • Who get’s to go? • a. It is our goal to accommodate as many people as we can. • b. Each class will be represented (Fresh, Soph, Junior, Senior… super Senior) • c. Activity and Participation in Pre-med society will be a factor in deciding who gets to go. • d. If you are unable to attend the first trip there will be more you can go on!
