  4. Symptoms of Poisonings -nausea/vomiting -diarrhea -chest/abdominal pain -breathing difficulty -sweating -loss of consciousness -burning/tearing eyes -swelling -seizures -burn injuries -headache -dizziness -weakness -irregular pupil size -abnormal skin color Page 70

  5. Poisonous Plants • Identify plant. • Apply cream/antibiotic • Do not itch. Poison Ivy Poison Oak Poison Sumac Page 70

  6. Insect Bites • Scrape stinger away with credit card. • Wash site with soap and water. • *Apply cold pack • Observe victim for signs of allergic reaction. • *Optional Page 70

  7. Tick • Remove tick with tweezers-pull slowly, steadily. (If you cannot remove tick, obtain medical care.) DO NOT BURN TICK • Apply antiseptic (cleaning alcohol) • Observe site and victim for signs of fever/rash/allergic reaction. Page 70

  8. Scorpion • Call 911. • While waiting for EMS to arrive, wash wound and apply cold pack to reduce swelling. • Observe victim for changes in consciousness. Page 71

  9. Snake • Call 911. • Wash wound. • Immobilize affected part. • Keep affected area lower than the heart. • Minimize victim’s movements. • DO NOT APPLY ICE Page 71

  10. Marine Life • Jellyfish • Call 911. • Soak injured part in vinegar (rubbing alcohol or baking soda paste). • DO NOT USE FRESH WATER OR AMMONIA Page 71

  11. Sting ray, sea urchin, spiny fish • Call 911. • Flush wound with water. • Soak wound in nonscalding hot water. Page 71

  12. Domestic Animal • Call 911. • Control bleeding. • (Do not wash wound if it is severe.) Page 71

  15. You and a friend are hiking on a trail in the Owyhee desert. Your friend is a considerable distance back. As you round a corner, you hear your friend yell in the distance. You turn around to say, “What?”. But when you turn around, you see your friend half-limping, half-running down the trail toward you. You run to your friend and hear him/her gasp out “Snake”. You look to see that your friend’s gastrocnemius is bleeding. • Is this situation life-threatening or non life-threatening? Explain. • Should you call 911? • What care can you provide?
