  1. Lesson 3.6 Objective: To solve decimal equations To solve real life sales tax problems So Far we have worked with equations that have integer or fraction answers. In real life, decimals are used often, especially when dealing with money. Rounding: Rounding of decimals often occurs when looking for a meaningful/practical answer. Money problems are usually rounded to the nearest hundredth (penny). Means approximately and is used in place of an equal sign when rounding.

  2. Example: Solve, round answer to the nearest hundredth Add 7 to both sides 13x – 7 = 27 + 7 + 7 Divide both sides by 13 13x = 34 13 13 1 2 .6 5 13 34 -26 8 0 -78 2 0 -13 7 0 -65 5 Stop and round X 2.62

  3. Sales Tax The added amount charged on purchased goods Find the total cost of an $30.00 item when 8% sales tax is added. 30 + 30 • 8% = Total Cost 30 + 30 • 08 = T 30 + 2.40 = T $32.40 = T

  4. The maximum number of students for a school bus is 60 students. 522 students are planning to attend the field trip. How many busses are needed? 60 students per bus • # of Busses = 522 total students Divide both sides by 60 60B =522 60 60 8 .7 60 522 B = 8.7 -480 42 0 -420 There is no such thing as a .7 bus. We must round up the nearest whole bus 9 busses are needed
