  2. Smart Work Zone System Goals • The goal of this system is to provide advance traffic condition information to motorists at key decision points due to construction activity. • Alternate Routing • Drive time through the work zone • Speeds ahead • Slowed/stopped traffic ahead

Tremendous Specification!!! • Very specific. • Hardware reliability- Autonomy, auto alerts for low battery voltage, sensor must have min 230 watts of solar. • Performance percentages for data collection- i.e.. volume data 5% of truth. • All current and historical traffic data, must be available through project webpage • Clear testing plan to verify all performance measure are satisfied.

  4. ASTI’s System Hardware • Real-Time Workzone Management Systems • 7, Queue Trailers- Wavetronix HD Technology • 4, Wanco VMS • 2, BlueToad Bluetooth sensors • Digital Communications Package • ASTI’s CHIPS Software/Webpage • How It works- web based, polling.

  5. CHIPS Software Thresholds • Speeds greater than 40mph: • STAY ALERT • DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE • Speeds between 15 mph and 40 mph: SLOWED TRAFFIC Y MILES- ahead • XX MINS 109 to 141- route • Speeds less than 15 mph: • STOPEED TRAFFIC Y MILES- ahead • XX MINS 109 TO 141- route

  6. MODOT Was Hands On • DOT overrode the vms to increase system effectiveness. • Accident past Lewis Rd • Roadwork mile marker 269 • 1 Lane Traffic • Lane Closures • Lane Shifts Ahead

  7. Results • ASTI does not have access to accident reports. • Motorists received accurate traffic information 24/7 at a location they could actively use. • DOT received outstanding traffic data 24/7 which allowed them to better manage this particular construction project as well as future projects- all data is the property of the DOT.
