The Role of Religion in our History • The Thirteen Original Colonies have a very religious history; from Puritans in the North to Catholics in Maryland. • Our Country was founded by Enlightened thinkers • Men and Women that think rationally • Religious Tolerance is our goal, have we achieved it?

  3. Freedom of Religion in the Constitution • The Establishment Clause: • “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of Religion” • The Free Exercise Clause: • Prohibits the government from unduly interfering with the free exercise of Religion.

  4. The Establishment Clause in Action • Where is the first place that Government and Religion mix? • Why?

  5. Everson v. Board of Education • The first ruling on the Establishment Clause, making it legal for Parochial School students to use Public School busing • Why is this a big deal?

  6. The Lemon Test • The Lemon test was created out of the Lemon v. Kurtzman case. Provides a process to make rulings on the Establishment Clause: • Have a clear secular purpose • Neither advance or inhibit Religion • Avoid excessive government entanglement with Religion

  7. Put the Lemon Test to the test • State help for parochial Schools when developing testing programs.

  8. Put the Lemon Test to the test • Tax Deductions from State Income Tax on tuition, textbooks, and transportation.
