BWS Solo Procedures WEATHER REQUIREMENTS: The current predominant ceiling shall be observed to be at or above 1500´AGLwith a predominant visibility at or greater than 3 statute miles.Both ceiling and visibility must be forecast to remain predominant, as stated, throughout the solo period. In the event that the predominant weather decreases below 1500/3, solo flights may recover to Shell AHP with a predominant ceiling of 1000´ AGL and a visibility not less than 3 statute miles. If the predominant ceiling and/or visibility deteriorates below 1000/3 the solo aircrew must land and await further instruction. The landing action for deteriorating weather conditions shall be under the advisement, guidance, and supervision of the chase aircrew.

  4. BWS Solo Procedures WEATHER REQUIREMENTS: Solo flight is prohibited when the known, observed, or forecast wind exceeds 20 knots or the gust spread exceeds 10 knots.

  5. BWS Solo Procedures PROHIBITED DURING SOLO FLIGHT: SVFR Operations Emergency Procedure Training IFR Flight (to include practice instrument approaches) Multi-aircraft/ formation flights for IERW students.

  6. BWS Solo Procedures SOLO STUDENTS SHALL: Aircraft starting will be accomplished utilizing an APU and with an IP in position to verbally assist with the start. In the event of an aborted start, all subsequent attempts to start the aircraft will be performed by the supervisory IP from the left seat.

  7. BWS Solo Procedures SOLO STUDENTS SHALL: Have the position lights on BRIGHT when operating solo

  8. BWS Solo Procedures SOLO STUDENTS SHALL: Shall not conduct Contour or Nap Of the Earth (NOE) flight.

  9. BWS Solo Procedures Except for an emergency requiring the aircraft to be landed immediately, landing at an RT or Base Field shall not be performed unless arrival has been acknowledged by HUB radio or the Chase Aircraft crew.

BWS Solo Procedures • SOLO STUDENTS SHALL: • Utilize an APU for all starts. • Have an IP present for all Preflight operations. • Not carry passengers. • Not take off after a Precautionary Landing has been accomplished. • Land at Shell AHP no later than 30 minutes prior to official downtime. • Except in an emergency, perform all approaches to only designated “SOLO RTs”, or authorized base fields and terminate the approach to a hover. • Maintain an altitude of 800´ MSL unless taking off or landing. • Avoid overflight of RTs by 1000 meters.

BWS Solo Procedures • SOLO DUTIES: • The student in the right seat will assume PIC duties and log PC on the 2408-12 • The student in the left seat will perform as co-pilot and log OR on the 2408-12. • The left seat student will not operate the controls of the aircraft unless in the case of an emergency that incapacitates the PIC. • Solo aircraft will add the suffix “SOLO” to their tactical call sign. • SOLO MAX FLIGHT DURATION • Solo aircraft will LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if any of the following occurs: • Total flight time 2+30 • Fuel remaining ≤ 100 lbs • 20 min fuel light illumination

  14. TROY AIRPORT OPERATIONS Under adverse winds conditions, aircraft may be cleared for Runway 14. If the aircraft is approaching from the East, a 45° Entry to the LEFT DOWNWIND is expected. Make a call to tower when entering the traffic pattern. If the aircraft is approaching from the West aircraft are expected to proceed north of the airport and enter the pattern on an EXTENDED BASE for 14. Make a call to tower when entering the traffic pattern. Caution should be used when crossing the RWY 07 approach course. Normally, any aircraft approaching Troy Airport will be told to report either a left or right base for landing Runway 32. Extreme caution should be used to detect and avoid converging traffic.

  16. TROY AIRPORT OPERATIONS All crew changes or seat swaps will be performed on a cold refuel parking pad ( 4 thru 14) Parking Pads 1, 2 and 3 are for Hot Refuel Only.

  17. TROY AIRPORT OPERATIONS If cleared to taxi “direct” to the parking area extreme caution should be used when crossing the sod area between RWY 32 and the parallel taxiway. After landing, contact Troy ground on VHF 121.9 (13) or UHF 263.125 (13). Advise them where you are and what you’d like to do. i.e. Troy ground this is Mustang 24 solo, clearing active runway 32. Request hover taxi to a hot refuel pad. During taxi an advisory call should be made on FM 36.50 stating your intentions. i.e. Troy ramp, this is Mustang 24 SOLO in aircraft 37C, taxing from active RWY 32 direct to pad 03.

  18. TROY AIRPORT OPERATIONS For Hot Refuel: Throttle: Engine Idle Force Trim switch: Force Trim ICS selector: ICS Transponder: Standby Anti Collision Light: Off Co-pilot will exit the aircraft, proceed around the nose of the aircraft, and assume fire-guard position. After refuel is completed the co-pilot will return to the co-pilot station and the aircraft will be repositioned to cold parking before the seat swap. In case of an emergency while on the refuel pad to your aircraft or another aircraft in refuel, execute an Emergency Shutdown, exit the aircraft and safely depart the refuel area. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPOSITION YOUR AIRCRAFT! EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN Throttle: Close Fuel Shutoff Valve Handle: Off (aft) Battery: Off

BWS Solo Procedures • SOLO SEAT SWAP PROCEDURES: • THROTTLE: Engine Idle • FORCE TRIM switch: Force Trim • CONTROL FRICTIONS: On (to include collective strap) • Left seat student exits the aircraft and assumes a guarding position holding the cyclic and collective to prevent inadvertent pull on the controls. (stay hooked up to ICS) • Right seat student exit the aircraft and proceed around the nose of the aircraft to assume the guarding position. ( Hook up to ICS) • Left seat student proceed around the nose of the aircraft (hook up to ICS) move into the pilot’s seat and secure with seatbelts and shoulder straps. Announce that you have the controls when ready and assume the PIC duties. • Right seat student move into the left crew station and secure.

  20. BWS Solo Procedures • SOLO LOST PROCEDURES: • A student pilot is considered lost any time he cannot orient himself along his intended route of flight. Student pilots shall execute the following procedures when unable to re-orient within 1 hour and 15 minutes after engine start or fuel is less than 200 pounds. • Climb to 1000′ MSL and attempt to re-orient • Remain VFR at all times • Notify the chase aircraft and HUB radio of the situation and state intentions. • If unable to re-orient, tune to an appropriate navigation aid and attempt to re-orient. • If unable to re-orient, contact Cairns Approach Control to either fix the position or vector the aircraft • to a known position. • If all attempts to re-orient fail, the aircraft shall be landed as soon as possible and follow the procedures • in Paragraph 6-18 of the 1/212th Aviation SOP. • After any unscheduled landing has been completed, telephone MISHAP/CRASH control (800-661-1081) • and request that the following be relayed to the 1/212th Aviation Regiment At Shell AHP Flt Ops (334-255- • 4108/4157/4147 with the aircraft serial number, location, and fuel status.

  22. BWS Solo Procedures SOLO LOST COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES: If either the UHF or VHF radio fails during the training period, the student will attempt to contact a dual aircraft on the working radio. If the FM Radio fails, inform the Flight Following agency of your status and return to Shell AHP. In the event of a complete communication failure climb to 1000′ MSL and return to Shell AHP for landing. In all cases, observe traffic flow and enter traffic flashing your Landing/Search light and land the aircraft on the appropriate pad associated with the winds and your parking spot. Anticipate a Light Gun Signal from the control tower and comply with instructions. Steady Green Cleared to Land Flashing Green Return for landing Steady Red Give way to other aircraft Flashing Red Airfield unsafe – Do Not Land

  23. BWS Solo Procedures • SOLO LOST COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES: • In the event that communication is lost with the SOLO CHASE aircraft due to a P/L • or loss of communications, SOLO students shall: • Maintain 800′ MSL and continue via their planned routes to Troy Airport or Shell • AHP without attempting any approaches to an RT. • Upon arrival, proceed to parking and if no IPs are available, shutdown the aircraft • and await further instructions. • IPs flying dual training periods may provide assistance as necessary.
