Setting Up Your Picture • Rule of Thirds - Using The Rule of Thirds places the main subject off center and away from the center of the frame. As a result, photos can look more dynamic and interesting.
Portraits • No “Deer in the headlights” pictures! • Keep the background simple to avoid distracting elements • Move in close for an above-the-waist or head-and-shoulders composition • Position your camera at or slightly below your subject's eye level.

Layers • Layers are your friend…use them! • Layers are like transparent pieces of paper stacked on top of each other.
Creating Backgrounds • You can blend colors or use solids • You can use filters for texture • Don’t make it too busy or your icons won’t show up • A good size for backgrounds is 800X600 pixels
Text • Use text features to personalize your graphics, icons and backgrounds • Use different fonts and text features for great looking text
Cropping and Resizing • Crop unneeded items or back-grounds so the focus is on the image. • Using the Selection Marquee, Draw a square around the part you want to keep • From your menu bar go to Image > Crop • Resize the picture to the size you want it within your graphics program • Image > Resize > Image Size > Change physical size as well as resolution
Creating Icons • Pull pictures from clipart, the web, or scan from textbooks • Delete the background to focus on the object using the magic eraser tool • Size your icons with the image resizer to match and fit well on the page
Altering to Suit Your Needs • Change the colors of ClipArt pictures to go with your color scheme • Use filters for added effects • Use Cookie Cutters for cute designs • Touch up photos • Remove backgrounds • Use layers to build an image
Neat Tips & Tricks On the toolbar under “Enhance” you can: • Sharpen a poorly lit picture – To easily adjust lighting, select levels, select the white pen and then click on something white in your picture – WOW! • To take the yellow out of a picture – adjust color > select adjust Hue/Saturation > select yellow >lower the saturation level.
Saving Pictures for the Web • Image > Resize > Image size > Resolution > 72 for Web • File > Save for Web • Your goal is to get the smallest file size that still looks good so your pictures load quickly (Tip: Use optimized color palette)
Saving Pictures for Print • For Print, pictures should have a resolution of at least 300 ppi. • It is much easier to take away resolution than to add it!(don’t do this unless absolutely necessary, it’s not pretty) • Start with a high resolution picture unless you know it will not be needed for print.
