  2. General Wolfe • British General who fought on the Plains of Abraham • Second in Command at Louisbourg, and helped defeat the French there • Died in battle on the Plains of Abraham • Known as “The hero of Quebec”

Treaty of Paris • Treaty that ended the Seven Years War • French kept fishing rights off the Coast of NFLD, and two small islands • Choice of Canada or Guadeloupe – chose Guadeloupe because the Sugar industry was seen as more profitable • Important to Canada because we became a British colony, following British Laws and Customs

  4. Guerilla Tactics • Small group of combatants who used ambushes, raids, element of surprise etc • France used this successfully at the beginning of the Seven Years War

Acadians • French Settlers who lived in the Maritimes • They were moved by the British because they would not sign an oath of allegiance • They did not want to fight for the British against the French • They left to Louisiana and became ‘Cajuns. • British Permitted them to return to Canada but few did

  6. Causes of the Seven Years War • War was inevitable • British and French had different settlement practices • French: Lived in Rural communities with small compact colonies, fur trade and agriculture • British: Thirteen colonies were in urban areas, economy focused on industry and commerce • France followed a policy of containment

Why were the British Successful? • Stronger more experienced soldiers • French were mostly Habitants and Natives • British out-numbered the French • British Attacked key points – Louisbourg, Ohio Valley, Plains of Abraham • British had the best navy in the world at this time • Had a well-trained general

  8. Fortress of Louisbourg • Tremendous Strategic importance: Mouth of the St. Lawrence River, all resources would pass this post – without it, the French would have no supply route • Owned by France • British defeated the French here led by Amherst and Wolfe
