  2. The purpose • The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal in the UK for civil cases, and for criminal cases from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It hears cases of the greatest public or constitutional importance affecting the whole population. • The Court must give effect to directly applicable European Union law, and interpret domestic law so far as possible consistently with European Union law. It must also give effect to the rights contained in the European Convention on Human Rights.

  3. Purpose • The Supreme Court: • is the final court of appeal for all United Kingdom civil cases, and criminal cases from England, Wales and Northern Ireland • hears appeals on arguable points of law of general public importance • concentrates on cases of the greatest public and constitutional importance • maintains and develops the role of the highest court in the United Kingdom as a leader in the common law world

Information • Parliament will make the law on behalf of the electorate - and the judges will be charged, if asked to, with assessing if it is being fairly applied. • And while devolution has shifted a lot of law-making to Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, the three legal and political systems will come together again in hearings before the Supreme Court.

Information • For civil cases from across the UK, and criminal cases in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, it will act as final court of appeal. • The court will also house the judicial committee of the privy council. • The decisions taken by the justices will affect subsequent judgements in the lower courts across the UK.

Current case • B (Algeria) (FC) (Appellant) v Secretary of State for the Home Department (Respondent) • (1) Whether the approach to appeal of sentence for contempt of court should be the same test (‘manifestly excessive’) as where a person guilty of a criminal offence appeals their sentence. (2) Whether a case should be remitted where a first instance sentencing decision in a contempt case was flawed and/or procedurally unfair unless it concludes that the court below would have reached the same conclusion even if [it] had not fallen into error.
