Cell Transformation. 13-3. Today, you get to be bacteria!!!! . Discussion. What are we doing in this activity??? Transformation  taking in DNA that is not your own Would it be possible for someone to have 2 bags of genes? Can you have 2 post-its (genes) on 1 plasmid?

  1. Cell Transformation 13-3

  2. Today, you get to be bacteria!!!!

  3. Discussion • What are we doing in this activity??? Transformation  taking in DNA that is not your own • Would it be possible for someone to have 2 bags of genes? • Can you have 2 post-its (genes) on 1 plasmid? • What was close to accurate and what was not? • Randomness, rate, plasmid shape, rewriting the gene, etc. • What if you misspelled the gene when copying? • What if there were plasmids on the ground? • Did everyone get a plasmid? Why or why not?

  4. Bacteria Prokaryotes no nucleus Bacteria have plasmids plasmid = circular DNA molecule

  5. Plasmids Plasmids have DNA sequences to promote replication

  6. Transformation = a cell takes in foreign DNA to make it a part of its own original DNA 1) free DNA in environment 2) extracted DNA 3) DNA from another bacteria is copied & transferred Recombinant DNA is formed = DNA produced by combining DNA from different sources *Pop bead demo*

  7. Recombinant DNA Technology Ex: Insulin production for humans with diabetes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpmNfv1jKuA
