  1. Working With Data Mode, Median, Range and Mean

  2. Data Data are numbers that you collect that tell you something…like in a survey… • How many televisions are in your house? • How many pairs of sneakers do you have? • How many brothers/sisters do you have? • How many bowls of ice cream can you eat at night?

  3. After you collect your data… You want to ANALYZE it. That’s what we do when we find the mode, median, mean and range of data!

  4. HINT, HINT!! When working with data… ALWAYS PUT YOUR NUMBERS IN ORDER FIRST!! 5, 8, 2, 10, 3, 6, 7, 8 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10

  5. Mode MODE is the number shown the MOSTin a set of data; or occurs MOST often 2, 4, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 The mode is 4.

  8. More practice with Mode Use the deck of cards to pick 5 numbers randomly. What is the mode of your numbers? Remember: If you do not see a number more times than any other number, there is NO MODE! Shuffle and keep practicing with a partner!

  9. Median Median is the middle number 2, 4, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 Work your way in or do what I like to do… …draw rainbows!!! The median is 5.

  14. Range Range is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in the group. SUBTRACT smallest from biggest!! 2, 4, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 The range is 8.

  16. Mean Mean is also known as the average of numbers. You find the mean/average by adding all of the numbers in your set. Then you divide by the number of numbers you added together.

Mean Examples A students scored the following on three social studies tests: 93, 80, 73 What is this student’s mean (or average) score? • Add the three numbers together: 246 • Divide this number by 3 (because you added three numbers together): 82 • 82 is this student’s mean (or average) score
