Responsible Conduct of Research • Best practices to insure integrity of data: • Original data to remain in laboratory • Quality of research data (interpretation, analysis) • Availability of information for scrutiny • Giving credit where credit is due • Responsibility for data integrity Nicole Bégin-Heick & Associate Inc.

  7. What is Conflict of Interest Any activity or situation having the potential to create a real, potential or perceived clash between personal interests and the duties, commitments or responsibilities of a person to his/her institution Nicole Bégin-Heick & Associate Inc.

  8. Individual responsibilities • Recognize situations that might give rise to COI • Avoid these situations, if possible • Disclose any (unavoidable) situation to the institutions • Abide by the institution’s decisions regarding COI Nicole Bégin-Heick & Associate Inc.

  9. Institutional responsibilities • Receive disclosure reports from individuals • Make decisions on whether or not to allow situations that might lead to (ar give the appearance of) conflict • Manage where warranted Nicole Bégin-Heick & Associate Inc.

Conflict situations may arise from: • material financial interests due to the private activities of individuals • use of institutional resources for the private activities of individuals • personal relationships • multiple roles played by individuals • external collaborative activities.   11. If COI is not appropriately managed… • Research may be (or perceived to be) biased and results unreliable • Public trust in the results of research may be lost • Research results may not be publishable • Research subjects may not be adequately protected Nicole Bégin-Heick & Associate Inc.

What should you do if… • As a supervisor • you are asked by a company in which you own shares to perform a study • you would like to assign a project sponsored by that company to your graduate student • The representative of a company that supports your research offers to take you and the members of your group for dinner in a posh restaurant Nicole Bégin-Heick & Associate Inc.

  15. What should you do if… • You are on a committee charged with the appointment, promotion or hiring of a person. You have a close personal relationship with the person being considered. • You would like to use as a textbook for your course a book on which you get royalties. • Your spouse works for an office furniture company.
