How do I choose TMT bars for a new home construction.

The TMT bars are abbreviated as Thermo Mechanically Treated bars. They are also called as Reinforcing bar or Rebar in Civil engineering terminology. These bars are used for providing the tensile strength to the structure which provides equilibrium for the compressive strength provided by concrete.

It is also called as fine aggregate which is either natural or in the form of crushed stones and crushed gravel sand. It is finer than gravel and coarser than silt. Sand is a basic raw material used in the construction industries. The particle size of sand varies between 150 microns and 4.75 mm. Sand can be obtained in two ways 1. Natural Sand or River Sand. 2. Manufactured Sand. Natural Sand or River Sand: Natural Sand has a very fine quality and are well-rounded and are usually nearly spherical. Natural sand has an ideal shape for use as fine aggregate in concrete. Spherical particles decrease the percentage of voids within the concrete mixture so no additional paste is required to fill these voids. Well-shaped natural sands are ideal for workability of mixtures. Natural sand does not require more water to 1/2

  2. enhance the workability of the mixture so the amount of bleed water in the concrete will not be increased. Manufactured sand : Manufactured sand is produced by reducing larger pieces of aggregate into sand-sized aggregate particles. It is also called as (M-Sand). Manufactured sands tend to be used in mixtures in areas where natural sand is not available or not cost effective to be hauled to the needed location. M Sand tends to be more angular and flaky due to the crushing process. Highly angular particles tend to increase the paste content of concrete because additional lubrication is required for particles with sharp corners. It is a substitute of river sand for concrete construction. Site checks for Sand. These are few tests that can be conducted at a site to check the quality of sand. 1. Presence of clay and moisture: The presence of clay or moisture in sand can be checked by rubbing the sand between two fingers, the sand should not stick to the fingers and there should not be any change in the colour of the fingers which indicated presence of clay particles. 1. Silt content: Take a glass of water, add some quantity of sand and stir it well. Now allow the mix to settle and observe it after an hour. Clean sand will settle immediately without forming any silt content on the top. If it forms the distinct top layer of silt then sand contains silt particles which indicates the improper quality of sand. 2. Fineness: Fineness of the sand can be done by visual inspection. All the particles of the sand should be evenly graded and should be of same size. If different sizes of the particles are present then the quality of sand is not good and it has to undergo sieve process for desired size. These are few tests which can be conducted at site initially at site and however there are also tests that has be conducted in laboratory to find the complete properties of the sand.
