  6. More about…World (Foreign) Language*/Fine Art**/Career Tech Electives 3 units required from any area Things to consider: *4-year colleges require at least 2 units of the same Foreign Language (more is better!). **Some colleges also require a fine arts and/or computer unit. It is your responsibility to check the requirements of every school you might consider and choose the appropriate courses during registration. Three of the 4 Pathwaysstudents can choose to complete will also fulfill this requirement.

  7. More about Pathways Students are strongly encouraged to choose at least one Pathway 4 options to choose from: • World (Foreign) Language • Levels 1, 2 and 3 of the same language • Fine Arts • Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the same fine art – band, orchestra, chorus, art • CTAE (Career Tech) • Follow a specified 3-course sequence of a particular technology subject • For example - Intro to Culinary, Culinary I, Culinary II • Advanced Academic • Complete at least 2 levels of the same foreign language • Take 1 AP or Dual Enrollment course in a required core subject area Pathways will help guide students toward a possible career/college goal and will be part of Pope’s state evaluation – we want as many people to complete a Pathway as possible!

  8. Sample 4-Year Plan • *World Geog is a Social Studies elective. • **You can take electives and Health/Personal Fitness in any order/arrangement as long as you meet the requirement for graduation.

  9. What if I can’t fit in everything I want? (or need to re-take something) • Cobb Virtual Academy (CVA) – www.cobbvirtualacademy.org • Georgia Virtual School (GAVS)– www.gavirtualschool.org (only an option if a course is not on CVA) • Summer School • Night School (credit recovery only) • NovaNet (credit recovery only)

  10. Georgia High School Writing Test All students must take and pass the GHSWT to graduate. Students write an essay based on a prompt. This test is given in September of the junior year.

  11. Promotion Requirements To promote to: • 10th grade – earn 5 units, including 1 full unit in required English, Math, and Science • 11th grade – earn 10 units, including 2 full units in required English, Math, and Science • 12th grade – earn 16 units (keep in mind that 16 + 6 = 22, so you really need 17 to be on track to graduate on time…)

  12. Athletic Eligibility

  13. HIGH SCHOOL: The Basics What is a Transcript? • “Permanent Record” • Lists every course attempted and grade earned in high school, including failed classes • Also includes: • GPA • Class rank • Total number of credits attempted and earned • Middle school courses taken for high school credit appear as a “P” for Pass • i.e. Spanish I, Algebra • Colleges evaluate transcripts to decide if you have the ability to be successful at their school

  14. Grade Point Average,Quality Points, and Rank Grade Point Average (GPA) The Pope GPA on the transcript is the overall, average of all high school grades, calculated on a “4.0 Scale” A = 90-100=4.0 B = 80-89 = 3.0 C = 74-79 =2.0 D = 70-73 =1.0 F = 0-69 =0.0 Quality Points* Honors courses get .5 “extra quality point” (EQP) AP courses get an extra 1.0 EQP *(Honors 9th Lit, AccelAlg/Geom A, H World Geog. do not receive EQPs) Rank Rank is determined by ordering all students’ GPAs in the particular class.

  15. Simple GPA Example Course Grade CreditPoint AttemptedValue 9th Lit A 95 .5 4.0 9th Lit B 83 .5 3.0 Algebra A 77 .5 2.0 Algebra B 90 .5 4.0 Biology A 86 .5 3.0 Biology B 85 .5 3.0 TOTALS 3.019.0 Average total Pointsby Credits Attempted (not credits earned) 19.0/3.0 = 6.3  You’re not done!!! ***Must divide by 2 since all credits are half credits 6.3/2 = 3.16 GPA

  16. Another GPA Example Course Grade CreditPoint AttemptedValue 9th Lit A 95 .5 4.0 9th Lit B 83 .5 3.0 Algebra A 77 .5 2.0 Algebra B 90 .5 4.0 Biology A 86 .5 3.0 Biology B 69 .5 0.0 TOTALS 3.016.0 Average total Pointsby Credits Attempted (not credits earned) 16.0/3.0 = 5.3  You’re not done!!! ***Must divide by 2 since all credits are half credits 5.3/2 = 2.60 GPA

  17. Different Types of GPAs • Overall GPA – includes every course on the transcript • Weighted GPA vs. Unweighted GPA • If “extra quality points” (EQPs) are included, the GPA is weighted • If there are no EQPs factored in, the GPA is unweighted • Core (or Academic) GPA – calculated using English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language classes only • Many colleges calculate an applicant’s GPA only using academic courses • Colleges may or may not award EQPs and often use their own system • HOPE GPA - uses all CORE courses and awards AP and dual enrollment courses only with .5 extra quality point. A’s receive no quality points. THE POPE TRANSCRIPT INCLUDES BOTH A WEIGHTED AND UNWEIGHTED, OVERALL GPA. IT DOES NOT LIST A CORE OR HOPE GPA!

  18. Rigor = Honors and AP Pope offers Honors and AP courses in each subject, including some electives. • Take courses according to your ability and follow the recommendations of your teachers. • Challenging courses prepare you for college as you learn good study habits and colleges look for rigor!!! • AP (Advanced Placement) courses are college-level courses and you could earn college creditby taking and passing an AP exam. • Pope awards Extra Quality Points to the Pope GPA for Honors and AP courses, which impacts rank. • Students who take rigorous courses do better on the SAT/ACT and other tests.

  19. AP Courses at Pope • AP Literature • AP Language • AP Statistics • AP Calculus AB and BC • AP Chemistry • AP Physics B and C • AP Biology • AP Environmental Science • AP Human Geography • AP World History • AP US History • AP Government • AP Micro and MacroEconomics • AP Spanish/French/German • AP Psychology • AP Computer Science • AP Studio Art • AP Music Theory New this year AP course selection is subject to change

All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will test, but you must come pay $15 in counseling office starting Sept. 23 to receive an official score report Why?-Prepare for the SAT - Get a higher score on the SAT - College exploration & planning - 11th graders who take the PSAT and have it officially scored are entered the National Merit Scholarship Program The PSAT is an important test… take it seriously and it can be quite beneficial in planning for your future!

  26. What factors do colleges consider? How to advocate for your student! • Stay informed –Blogs, Hound Highlights, Pope website, Pinnacle, PTSA meetings, Twitter accounts, etc. • Establish and maintain contact, as well as a good working relationship, with your child’s teachers.
