  3. Computer Literacy Skills • Provides all members of the University community with the tools necessary to gain the confidence and experience to effectively use campus computing systems and productivity software.

  5. Campus Survey • Campus surveyed on IT Training needs in Fall 2001 • Instructor Led workshops were preferred delivery method. • Combination of CBT and instructor led training was an ideal solution. • High needs training…

  6. Training Retention • Listening • 5% • Activity • 70% • Teaching • 90% Do not waste the learners time. Training must be effective.

  7. Pedagogy • Instructor has full responsibility for: • making decision about what will be learned. • how it will be learned. • when it will be learned. • If it has been learned. • Instructor directed education.

  8. Andragogy • Andragogy assigns the instructor responsibility for creating a learning environment that is facilitates the needs of an adult learner. • Adults are self directed/discovery • Task oriented • Immediate relevance

  9. Andragogy, Pedagogy and CLS • The Computer Literacy Skills program incorporates features of both pedagogy and andragogy.

  10. CLS Mandate • Establish a campus wide IT training program • Incorporate various training methods • Accommodate competency levels

  11. CLS - Now • Voluntary workshops are delivered in 90 minute units over the lunch period. • Attendance is ~ 70% staff, 20% staff, 10% faculty. • Departmental specific workshops. • Staff, faculty or student centred.

  13. Training Options • The CLS program has three components that can be used independently or to supplement one another. • Instructor Led Workshops • Microsoft Interactive Training • E-learning

  14. The First Year… • Instructor Led Workshops • Over 100 workshops delivered to 1000 participants • E-learning • 180 current registrants

  15. Pros • Workshop participation increased by ~ 400% over the previous year. • Workshop feedback indicated that 92% of participants “Strongly Agreed” that the workshops were effective • Delivered departmental specific workshops to six departments.

  16. Improvements • Create effective communication methods on campus. • Deliver workshops on sliding schedules to meet the greatest number of possible participants. • Create an environment of training on campus.

  17. A Campus Wide Initiative • ITS and HR. • Campus Wide Training Program. • HR develops requisite IT skills for employment positions. • IT develops workshop training plan. • HR maintains individual training record for employees.
