  4. Parenthetical Citations: Where is it needed? The Road is more than just the title of the book. The storyline revolves around the road because the road is the source of life for the main characters. “’What are we going to do? We’re going to drink some water. Then we’re going to keep going down the road.’” The plan for survival was to follow the road to the coast, which was stated in this quote. Without the road, the protagonists in the story would have nothing to follow to the coast because they would have no sense of direction and no way to survive. That is why The Road is an excellent title for the book.

  5. What goes into the parenthetical citation? • “’What are we going to do? We’re going to drink some water. Then we’re going to keep going down the road.’” • Author’s name • Page Number • Surrounded by Parenthesis

  6. The Citation • “’What are we going to do? We’re going to drink some water. Then we’re going to keep going down the road’” (McCarthy 88). • NOTICE: • There is NO comma between the author and page number! • The period comes AFTER the citation. • The end quotation comes BEFORE the citation.
