  15. Immigration in Australia • As you have heard, there has been a lot of people coming from their own countries to Australia illegally, because it is not safe in their own countries. • They come on half sinking boats, which are over flowing with people, with no water and food and with the hope that they will make it to land…..alive! • After they come into Australia, they are put into ‘detention centres’ which are basically same rooms but they are given food and water. Nothing to complain about.

  20. Migration I'm also very pleased about the fact that it is not just permanent migrants who are choosing Australia from Nepal in such large numbers, but students as well. Of course, one of the great benefits of having people from around the world studying in Australia is that, if people come to Australia, have a good experience being students of Australia, that means they'll be lifelong ambassadors - lifelong ambassadors of Australia to Nepal and lifelong friends of Australia in Nepal. And of course, lifelong advocates of Nepalese-Australian relations. And I'm very pleased that in 2011-12, almost 7000 student visas were granted to Nepali international students to study in Australia. I'm looking forward to those figures growing even further with the reforms that we are implementing in relation to permanent post-study work rights and to better streamlining of visa processing for students. We continue to encourage students from around the world, particularly from Asia, to come and study in Australia and take that experience with them for the rest of their lives. This is of course something that can be of the greatest benefit for Nepali-Australian relations for many years to come Chris Bowens Speeches This is part of a speech Chris Bowen address to the non-resident Nepali association regional conference. This part of his speech is about the immigration from Nepali to Australia. He is saying that he is very proud of how many students come over to Australia as well.

  21. Ensuring successful settlement for all our migrants – especially our humanitarian and refugee intake – is something that has long been important to me. Growing up in multicultural Western Sydney, I’ve always been struck by the abilities, talents and cultural richness of our fellow Australians who came here as humanitarian migrants and refugees.Of course, making sure every support is given to make sure every individual can grow to their full potential is important to those individuals and should also be regarded as important to our society and our nation. The title of this Conference is “Transition, From Refugee to Citizen”. As a local councillor, mayor, Member of Parliament, and now Minister for Immigration, I’ve been privileged to attend hundreds of citizenship ceremonies. The pledge of citizenship, which only takes a few short moments, acknowledges a lifelong undertaking – it is the emotional commitment that accompanies the physical act of relocating. To my mind, this makes citizenship a key indicator of the success of our migration program and a measurable outcome of settlement. Chris Bowen Speeches This is an extract of his speech he made at the Conference “Transition, From Refugee to Citizen”.

  22. Chris Bowen was on Sunrise being interviewed about children in detention centres. Start at 1:57

  23. How would you feel? How would you feel if you were a child in a Detention Centre? How do you feel about knowing that 281 children, just like you, are in a detention centre? How do you feel about detention centres?? If you were in Chris Bowens position, what would you do about immigration and refugees?
