  1. Reducing Water Waste Kevin Rabalais Advisor: Edward Rode’ ET 493

  2. Why I chose this project?Because of the Importance of eco friendly changes on our campus • budget cuts Staring this year • $2 Million to $22 Million • sustainability projects Saved • $1.2 Million

  3. Project Overview Main Goals: Lower water waste on Southeastern Louisiana University’s campus. Research the current water usage for buildings on southeastern campus and try and cut the usage and waste by 50% Calculate the cost and cost effectiveness that this project will entail

  4. Where I obtainedthe information dealing with the water usage I acquired the monthly water reading of each building on campus for 2012 by meeting with the head of the maintenance department on Southeastern’s campus, Byron Patterson

  5. Buildings

  6. D Vickers (older)

  7. Fayard Hall (newer)

  8. Zachary Taylor Hall (older)

  9. Pride Hall (newer)

  10. How to Bring down the water usage? Replace Current bathroom fixtures with eco friendly fixtures

  11. What the new valves look like

  12. Dimensions

  13. VS New Fixtures Commode Valve manual motion censer Urinal Valve manual motion censer Sink Aerator Current Fixtures manual manual

  14. Water Saved New Fixtures use 16% less water Percent saved in D Vickers and Fayard Hall Percent saved in Pride and Zackary Taylor Hall

  15. water (urinal) + Water (Commode) + water (sink)*(2) 1(gal)+1.6(gal)+0.733*2(gal) = 4.066 Break down of water use in D Vickers Hall (2012) based on 50/50 ratio of people using the commode and urinal with %100 of the people using the sink (20 sec)

  16. Water and money that could be saved in D Vickers Hall(2012)

  17. Class room buildings D Vickers (2012) Fayard hall (2012)

  18. Dorm buildings Pride Hall(2012) Zackary Taylor(2012)

  19. Cost of fixtures •American standard - M922901-0020A - 0.5 gpm / 1.9 L/min Pressure Compensating Non-Aerated Spray Price: $7 •American Standard - SelectronicFloWise Exposed Flush Valve - 1.28 GPF 6065.525 - 1.28 GPF Retrofit WC Flush Valve Price: $510.00 •American Standard - SelectronicFloWise Exposed Urinal Flush Valve 0.5gpf 6063.505 - 0.5 GPF Retrofit Urinal Flush Valve Price: $510.00

  20. Number of fixtures needed

  21. Cost of changing the fixtures for the class room buildings and dorms Fayard Hall and D Vickers Hall (Class room buildings) Pride Hall and Zackary Taylor Hall (Dorm room Buildings)

  22. Amount of time for savings to equal the cost The two class room buildings, Fayardand D Vickers, new changes could pay themselves off in savings after a little over 5 years The two dormitory buildings, Pride Hall and Zackary Taylor Hall would take over 270 years.

  23. Problems I encountered • The dorms have Showers and longer sink use to account for. • The cost to replace motion censored faucets was too great • I Found that the dorms would not be cost effective

  24. Any Questions ?
