THE TRUTH IMPACT SCHOLARSHIP Big Tobacco has a history of exploiting the most vulnerable and at-risk communities across the country. The truth Impact Scholarship was created because we believe one of the most powerful tools for change is one’s personal narrative and the ability to overcome challenges. At PRIDE events in 2019, you will be supporting the Impact Scholarship by handing out palm cards that promote the scholarship. • One $10,000 & one $5,000 scholarship awarded to a US resident in August 2019 • The scholarship will be awarded to two students who complete an application and share their personal stories of: • Overcoming adversity, • Determination in the face of challenges, • Community service and activism, • How this scholarship will have an impact on their future
WHAT IS THE IMPACT SCHOLARSHIP SOMETIMES THE ONLY THING STANDING BETWEEN YOU AND REACHING YOUR GOALS IS A KICKSTART. We know that not everyone who has the power to make change has the resources. And we want to see what you can do with just a liiiitttle help pushing forward. So, we’re giving away two scholarships – one $10,000 and one $5,000 – for two people to put toward shaping their futures. Everyone has a unique story, and we want to hear yours. Tell us about the challenges you’ve overcome to get to this point and what you hope to do with the money from this scholarship. It can be tough to talk about facing adversity – and even tough to brag about yourself! – but we want to hear it all. This is your chance to turn your history into fuel for your future. thetruth.com/Impact
HOW IT WORKS To enter, applicants will complete a short application & create a short, two to three-minute video telling us their journey. Here’s what they should cover in the video. • Who you are and where you're from. • The challenges faced by either you or your community and the adversity you’ve already overcome. Don’t be afraid to be honest. • If you have one, tell us about your personal connection to tobacco, smoking, vaping, or the opioid epidemic. If you have a story, we’d love to hear it. • How the Impact Scholarship will help shape your future. • Tell us your biggest ambition/goal in life. Where do you see this scholarship, and education, taking you? • You’ll be able to upload your video at the end of the application. That’s it! Get creative and be yourself.
ABOUT TRUTH The truth campaign started in 2000. Then the teen smoking rate was 23%. Currently, it is less than 5%.. • The truth campaign is not a non-profit. We are a movement. • Truth Initiative is the non-profit organization that funds the truth campaign Here are a few of the facts that are motivating The truth Impact Scholarship: • 72% of all remaining smokers come from lower income communities • LGBTQ young adults are nearly 2X more likely to to smoke • In cities like DC, there are up to 10X more tobacco ads in black neighborhoods than other neighborhoods You will also have access to an LGBTQ Fact Sheet provided by Truth Initiative in your online resource portal.
THE TRUTH MERCH SHOP In 2019 truth is launching an online retail shop to help fund the fight against Big Tobacco. For nearly 20 years, truth has been creating a line of streetwear merch that contains life saving facts about smoking and tobacco. Historically, it was only available to those young people whom we interacted with on our tours. In 2019 we open up access for all people to rep the brand and help spread the truth. On the back of the Impact Scholarship palm cards will be information about the newly launched merch shop. FACT: CIGARETTES KILL NEARLY HALF A MILLION AMERICANS EACH YEAR. THAT IS MORE THAN AIDS, ILLEGAL DRUGS, ALCOHOL, CAR ACCIDENTS, MURDERS, AND SUICIDES COMBINED.
