  2. WHAT IS DAILY 5? The Daily 5 is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence. It provides a structure for conferring with students, a language for talking about reading development, and a system for tracking growth fostering student independence. Our weekly reading stories, spelling lists, and vocabulary words are based from the Harcourt Trophies series.

  3. READ TO SELF : The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just-right reading level. READ TO SOMEONE: Reading to someone allows for more time to practice strategies, helping your work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community. WORK ON WRITING: Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day. SPELLING/WORD WORK: Correct spelling allows for more fluent writing, thus speeding up the ability to write and get thinking down on paper.

  4. Meet with teacher: Strategy Groups Conferencing Strategic reading groups are flexible groupings. We use MAP Growth, Scholastic Reading Inventory and PARCC data throughout the year to determine groups. We use the story vocabulary and skill assessments as well. This data helps us determine if students need additional support or enrichment with skills and strategies being learned. This helps us differentiate instruction to best meet the needs of each student. When we conference with students we are listening to reading, practicing comprehension strategies discussing writing, providing feedback, reinforcing skills, and setting goals.

  7. FOCUS, COHERENCE, RIGOR F0CUS: Students will learn fewer math concepts in each grade, but they will focus on them in greater depth and detail. COHERENCE: Coherence is about making math make sense. It means students make learning connections with and across grades. The common core standards define progressions of learning from one grade to another that build knowledge and understanding across grades. RIGOR: To help students meet the expectations of the common core, we need to pursue three aspects of rigor in conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application.

  8. What is Daily 3 Math? Daily 3 Math is a structure in which the teacher supports students’ development of math skills, strategies, and concepts within the context of a small group. Teachers facilitate this learning through focused conversations and targeted questioning. Whole group instruction Small group instruction Math games/skill application Independent practice Enrichment activities

  9. WEBLINKS My Math Web Site : Great resource to supplement daily math lessons. Xtramath: Daily math fact practice for math fluency. Spelling City: Resource for practicing weekly spelling words. GreatSchools.org: Parent resource for worksheets, common core practice and parenting tips.
