  3. Junior Calendar Mrs. Garcia & Ms. Purchase

  4. All Year • Continue to take challenging courses. Review requirements for graduation, college admission and collegiate athletics. • Get good grades. • Register for and take standardized tests. • Continue to be involved in activities, volunteer, and seek out leadership roles. • Continue documenting your activities, honors and awards.

  5. October – December • Take the PSAT on Sat, Oct 18th. • Attend college representative visits. Sign up in the Counseling Office. • Start to make a list of colleges you are interested in learning about. • Focus on your college search by looking through any or all of the college guidebooks and/or search engines.

  6. October – December (cont.) • If you are interested in playing Division I or II sports in college, review the NCAA eligibility requirements at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net • Involve yourself in clubs and activities that interest you and continue to assume leadership positions. • Attend College Financial Planning Night at Torrance High on December 2nd at 6:30 pm. • Schedule college visits over Winter Break.

  7. January – March • Attend the PSAT Parent Night in January. • Consider taking the SAT/ACT. • Take the Mock SAT/ACT at West High. • Use your research of colleges, standardized test scores, and your GPA to come up with a tentative list of schools. • Attend the TUSD College Fair on February 21st at Torrance High School from 11 am – 2 pm. • Research valuable summer opportunities.

  8. April – June • Prepare for standardized tests. • Register for and take the May/June SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, and/or ACT. • Attend Brown Bag College Workshops. • Begin working on your brag sheet. • Begin looking for scholarships. • If you are taking college tours in the Summer, do research.

  9. Summer 2009 • Visit colleges. • Start working on college essay(s). • Start to develop your performing or visual arts portfolio. • Research additional scholarships. • Spend time preparing for the SAT/ACT.

  14. El Camino College Summer School • Check with your counselor before registering to ensure you are taking the appropriate course. • Free tuition.

  15. What Financial Help is Available? • GRANTS…don’t need to repay, State/Federal money • LOANS…repay in future • SCHOLARSHIPS…gifts with no obligations to repay • WORK STUDY… work while attending school

  16. How do I get the money? • File Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) between January 1 and March 2 of Senior year. • File Cal Grant GPA Verification Form by March 2 of Senior year. • For Private Colleges, you must also submit the CSS Profile beginning October 1 of Senior year.
