  2. Cognitive Psychology • Psychodynamic, humanist theories arose from clinical tradition • Social Cognitive Theory – solid scientific research • Not as comprehensive • Overlook emotion and unconscious processes

Albert Bandura – Observational Learning • Personality is driven by our expectations of how our actions affect other people, the environment, and ourselves. • Observational (vicarious) learning – learn by watching others, see how they are rewarded of punished. • Personality is a collection of learned behaviors, most of which we have borrowed from others. • Skills, attitudes, and beliefs are acquired by watching others.

Cognition Environment Behavior Reciprocal determinism • Process in which cognitions, behavior, and the environment mutually influence each other. • Ex: you are interested in psych (cognition) so you major in psych and become involved in the dept (environment) and interact with students and faculty (behavior). You will grow more interested as you spend more time with these people.

Julian Rotter • LOCUS OF CONTROL – an individual’s sense of where his or her life influences originate • How we act, depends on our sense of personal power • INTERNAL – you have power and control over your own life • EXTERNAL – you believe outside forces determine the course of your life. • More likely to suffer from depression • Research shows, important aspect of personality • People approach situations differently if they assume they can control their own fate.

Implicit Personality Theory (FOLK) • Assumptions about personality, held by people to simplify the task of understanding others. • Like implicit memory, work in the background, out of our awareness • People assume clusters of traits go together • Creativity, emotional sensitivity • Our experiences can affect our assumptions • Fundamental attribution error • Assumption that another persons behavior is the result of a flaw in their personality, rather than in the situation • Someone falls, they are clumsy instead of because of ice
