  3. Educational Philosophy * To create LIFE LONG LEARNERS, education should be meaningfuland relevant. * Students need a supportive, safe environment in which they can take risks, mess up, and grow from their experiences. * Every child CAN learn!! * Children will rise to meet your expectations!!

  8. Class DOJO • Stop!!!! Think!!! Make a Good Choice!! *Behavior is tracked using Class DOJO. *There are positive and negative behaviors that are tracked. *At the end of the week, students who have earned 10 positive points or more are rewarded with a treat on Friday.

  9. Class DOJO (cont.) *A lesser reward is given for 5-9 points. * No reward given for less than 5 points. *Students who are in negative points on Friday, will need to think about and plan how to make a change in the upcoming week. *Parents may track behavior online using their child’s code (this information was sent home the second week of school).

  14. Curriculum Overview * Standards between second and third grade change, and third grade standards are significantly more challenging. There is a HUGE jump. * Third grade is a very transitional, difficult year. Expect challenges, but you can also expect GREAT success. * We have transitioned to the Florida Standards.

  15. Assessments • Aims Web – Given throughout the year. Both reading and math. • FSA - **NEW** Florida Standards Assessment • LEOYE (Local End of Course Exams)

  16. Replacement for the FCAT: • FLORIDA STANDARDS ASSESSMENT (FSA) • In the Math portion, there will be an increased number of EXPLAINING type situations. • Students will be required to use words to show reasons for their answer choices.

  17. Reading * All reading grades will be based on weekly selection assessments, cold read assessments, ELA Learning Checks, and word work assessments. * A typical reading block, which is 90 minutes per day, includes a short whole group lesson, small group instruction, station rotations, writing instruction, and Social Studies integration….WOW!!! * Very seldom will students use worksheets to practice within the classroom, although sometimes worksheets will be assigned, as homework, to practice important skills.

  18. Reading (cont.) * Literacy Notebooks will be used in many ways throughout the year…journals, station work, vocabulary, shared reading, guided reading etc. * Accelerated Reader –Students need to read quality literature and learn to love reading, regardless of whether or not a text is an AR book. Individual goals will be set based on each students reading level.

  19. Language Arts/Writing *Word Work – Weekly word work tests will be on Fridays. Homework DAILY except on Fridays. * 6 Traits of Writing - Ideas, Sentence Fluency, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, and Conventions will be taught using mentor texts. * Writer’s Notebook – Students will use these notebooks for important writing information, free writing journal entries, and writing assignments. * The Writer’s Notebooks will be graded periodically.

  20. Handwriting/Cursive * This year students will be learning cursive within Language Arts. Students will be given instructions and will practice in stations.

  21. Social Studies * Geography * Celebrating Culture * Economics * Government and Civics *Students will be using interactive social studies notebooks to help with studying and doing in-class projects to help with social studies concepts.

  22. Math * Number Sense, Concepts, and Operations. * Measurement * Geometry and Spatial Sense * Algebraic Thinking * Data Analysis and Probability *Students will be assessed using Fluency Computations and Mid and Chapter Tests. * Students will be using interactive math notebooks and doing in-class projects to help with their success with the math curriculum. Think Central Math Center

  23. Critical areas that are emphasized in 3rd grade MATH are: • Developing an understanding multiplication and division strategies with 100 • Developing and understanding of fractions, especially with using 1 as a numerator • Developing an understanding and using rectangular arrays and of area • Describing and understanding 2-dimensional geometric shapes.

  24. Science Topics * Scientific Process • Observing and Measuring Matter • States of Matter • Forms of Energy • Light Energy • Solar Energy, the Sun, and Gravity • Investigating the Stars • Plants • Classifying Animals • Environmental Influences * Students will be using interactive science notebooks to help with studying and doing in-class projects to help with science concepts.

  25. Science Book Website * www.myngconnect.com * Students can see, hear and use their textbooks by going to their Student Desktop at the MCPS site. * Students will be using interactive science notebooks to help with studying and doing in-class projects to help with science concepts.

  27. Homework *Homework assignments for each subject are displayed each day on the ASSIGNMENT BOARD. *Students are expected to write down their assignments in their planners from the board and take needed materials home. Homework is to be returned when due. *Planners are also the MAIN form of communication between teacher/parent. *A homework folder is used to carry assignments back and forth each day. • Students must read EVERY DAY for 20 minutes!

  28. Tardiness *Breakfast is served beginning at 7:20 a.m. and students should arrive in class by 7:45 a.m. *If a student is not in the classroom by the 7:45 bell, they must check in at the school office before coming to class. *We will contact you quickly if tardiness become an issue.

Other Tidbits * Volunteers - on an as needed basis – MUST have affidavit filled out (field trips, field day, holiday parties..etc.) * Field Trips – TBA * Cell Phones - turned off at all times on campus * Lunch – If you would like to have lunch with your child you can visit the front office to get a pass to join your child in the cafeteria. * Birthdays – Store Bought treats can be brought to school to pass out during lunch. Invitations can only be passed out to all students, or no students at all. 

  30. Other Tidbits (cont.) *Absences/Make-up work – Students will have a week to complete make-up work IF a note is provided and it’s excused. * Cheating– Students will automatically receive a grade of “0” on that particular assignment/test. *Dismissal – begins at 2:05 * Changes in Transportation – a note MUST be written. Please remember to put students first and last name along with teachers name.
