The Mission of Coastal Horizons • Coastal Horizons Center, Inc. promotes choices for healthier lives and safer communities by providing professional assistance to those in need of prevention, crisis intervention, criminal justice alternatives, community outreach, substance abuse treatment services, and mental health treatment services. These services are provided to make a significant impact on the physical, emotional, and social development of children, adults, and families in our area.

  4. History of RCC • 1972-Crisis Line Established • Up through 1980- Employees offered services to rape and sexual assault victims in the community solely through volunteering • 1980-Establishment of Rape Task Force • 1985- Rape Task ForceRape Crisis Center

  5. RCC Population Served • Victims of sexual assault and/or rape seeking medical treatment, individual or group support therapy, investigative legal support, evidence collection, advocate assistance, information and referrals, court advocacy, and 24 hour services free of charge.

RCC Population Served, Cont. • For 2005-2006 Fiscal Year: • 372 sexual assault victims/survivors sought services • 79 family members/friends/significant others sought services • 380 continuing survivors utilized RCC • 28% of new victims under 18 • 17% suspected/confirmed drug-facilitated rapes • 102 Hospital Crisis Intervention Services, with 80% filing a law enforcement report

Duties Performed by Student On-call CIS response 48 Hours a month Currently, 2 hospital visits Rock Against Rape Committee Weekly meetings Booked bars, bands UNCW Involvement Planning, publicity, etc. Young Women’s Self Esteem/Self Image Art Workshop Attended weekly workshops Planned Reception Thursday, April 19th 5:30-8pm, Westside hall location, sponsors, catering services, entertainment, speakers, invitations, creation of art display Various community activities Prom Swap Vagina Monologues

  9. Applicability to Field • Discussion of intervention work Hospital visits, Crisis Intervention Services • Discussion of prevention work Rock Against Rape, local event participation, Planning, etc.
