  1. Carl Orff 1895-1982

  2. Orff was born in July during 1895 and died in March of 1982. He was born in and lived most of his life in Munich, Bavaria.

  3. Early Life • After he was wounded in World War I, Carl Orff went back to studying music. • The music he studied was from late Renaissance and early Baroque.

  4. Wedding Bells • Orff was first married in 1920 to Alice Solscher and they had one daughter, Godela, before getting divorced. • He then married Alice Willert in 1939 (-1953), LuiseRinser in 1954 (-1959), and Liselotte Schmitz in 1960.

  5. During and After the War During World War II, Orff laid low. He didn’t release any new songs or make a big deal of his work. After the war, Orff was accused of Nazi sympathies by people who didn’t like his music. These accusations are untrue, in fact, he took little interest in politics.

  6. Orff conducted many compositions by Heinrich Schutz. Schutz was a pupil of Giovanni Gabrieli and lived during the 16th century.

  7. First Success • Orff became known as a prodigy when Orff-Schulwerk came out. • This was a group of songs and poems for children.

  8. CarminaBurana • CarminaBurana was originally a collection of Latin poems. • These poems were about issues we have today in society; love, gambling, drinking, fate, and fortune. • Orff chose 24 poems to be arranged into groups and then to music. • The poem groups were: • Fortune, Empress of the World; Springtime; In the Tavern; and The Court of Love.

  9. O Fortuna O Fortune First oppressed And then soothes Like the moon You are changeable As fancy takes it Ever waxing Poverty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWiyKgeGWx0 And power And waning Hateful life It melts them like ice
