  2. Establish a Strategy • EXPLORE 8th or 9th Grade • Begin parent conversations/communication. • Use an ACT set up for assigning testing locations. • Follow ACT protocol—does it look and feel like the ACT? • PLAN 10th Grade • Add persuasive essay. • Score essay according to an ACT style rubric.

English 45 minutes 75 questions Math 60 minutes 60 questions Reading 35 minutes 4 different passages 40 questions It tests their ability to read and understand…not prior knowledge Science Reasoning 35 minutes 40 questions 7 passages total=2-3 minutes (20-30 seconds) Writing 30 minutes In a Nutshell: M/C: 2 hours 55 min. 215 questions One-ten minute break Writing portion = 30 min.   5. Increase familiarity with two- column text. Institute T4 strategy to break down tougher reads. Consider timed tests, reduces “shell shock.” Use passage format, multiple choice style answer…timed (2-3 min=20-30 seconds). Add Roman numeral review. Encourage #2 pencils. Address: Grammar Punctuation Sentence Structure Rhetoric Use Test Taking Tips: Elimination Approach Plus or Minus Approach WAC: Consider providing familiarity by using ACT rubric.   6. Use “highly” timed tests. A,B,C,D,E as possible answer choices. F,G,H,J,K as possible answer choices. No “mechanical pencils”. Add Roman numeral review. Covers: Arithmetic Elementary & Intermediate Algebra Geometry Trigonometry Problem Solving WAC: Consider providing familiarity by using ACT rubric. Strategies: Underline or circle what they are looking for (solve for x??). Simplify- combine terms/operations Substitute #’s from variables Approximate Make a diagram—sketch it if needed Work from the answers provided Implement T4 strategy to break down tougher reads. Review Pre-Algebra and Algebra! How Can We Help Them In Math ClassesGrades 8-11?

  9. Writing • Make and articulate judgments by: • Taking a position on the issue. Demonstrating the ability to grasp the complexity of the issue by considering implications or complications. • Develop a position by: • Presenting support or evidence using specific details. • Using logical reasoning that shows the writer’s ability to distinguish between assertions and evidence and to make inferences based on support and evidence. • Sustain a position by focusing on the topic throughout the writing. • Organize and present ideas in a logical way by: • Logically grouping and sequencing ideas. • Using transitional devices to identify logical connections and tie ideas together. • Refute the opposition. • Communicate clearly by: • Using language effectively. • Observing the conventions of standard written English. Essays are scored holistically—that is, on the basis of the overall impression created by all of the elements of the writing.

Consider our options…provide greater possibilities • Adapt WAC or persuasive essays to resemble the ACT writing test. • Greater fluency with reading, understanding, and comprehension. • Provide more exposure to highly timed, multiple choice tests. (5 answers whenever possible) • To reduce test anxiety…the key is preparation. • Can we change our perspective? Encourage students to prepare and simply “attack” the test the first time! (no different than a vocal performance, music competition or an athletic event)
