Last Part of Chapter 8 • Diplomacy: • The Act of working together and talking out issues. • Canada has a history of Diplomacy.. • The Cold War aligned countries as Capitalist or Communist, and most felt war was inevitable.
Non-Alignment • During this time many countries decided to not side (align) with either side.

Nuclear Arms Treaty • The USSR and the US began a new era after the cold war. Détente. • Détente – a period of reducing tension. • The Nuclear Arms Treaty: Both sides began to limit the development of Nuclear weapons. This became known as SALT 1 and SALT 2.
End of the Cold War • Despite the distrust, the cold war ended. • Both Ronald Reagan and Gorbachev (USSR) agreed to limit Nuclear Weapons. • By 1991 the cold war officially ends with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Aboriginal Experience With Liberalism • We’ve talked about the Great Law of Peace. • We’ve seen the development of Liberalism in Europe. • But, how do they interact.

Policy of Assimilation • Many ideologies of the Europeans clashed with the ideas of Native Americans. • Their desire to fight European Ideology stated the British idea of Assimilation.
Indian Act After Confederation the Indian act was passed in 1876. It made “Indians, and their lands” the responsibility of the Canadian Government. An “Indian Agent” was to be set up by the government to oversee all Indians and their lands.
Females Identity and the Indian Act • Until 1985 females that married non natives lost all status. • The role of a woman was measured in the wealth of her First nations husband. • Although the law has changed, inequality still exists.
The Royal Commission • The Government made a royal commission on aboriginal affairs. • It attempted to: • Advance aboriginal self-government. • Appropriate compensation for past abuses.
Continued They went across Canada to research what had happened to the aboriginal. They urged a new attitude towards aboriginals.
Outcomes Creation of an aboriginal parliament. Settlement of land claims. Funds for healthcare, housing, and education. Creation of an aboriginal university. Spending from 2 billion to 8 billion.
The Royal Commission and residential schools Held stories of the abuse in the schools. Financial compensation for those that were abused. (but, it took a long time coming!) Creation of Band Schools.
Apology In 1998 the government issued a statement of reconciliation. It apologized for the abuse given towards to aboriginals. Including Residential Schools.
