    3. What helps success? The Secret to success: - Attendance and Punctuality Time Management and Planning Attitude Effort Time 4/5 hours EXTRA per subject per week!!!

    4. Attendance Procedure Students must maintain 85% or above All absence MUST be accounted for Parents must phone in on first day accounting for every day absent. If student phones we must have a parental written record the day the students returns. Avoid Holidays during school time. Note A2 work starts AFTER AS exams finish in June Large number of students not allowed to return to year 13 as poor attendance had significant effect on attainment

    5. Attendance No time off allowed for medical, dental appointments. No time allowed off for driving lessons. This includes Wednesday period 5 when assemblies may be called. Higher Education programme starts February. Driving practical tests, hospital appointments and orthodontist appointments are allowed but must be booked IN ADVANCE. One days religious holiday allowed. Please no holidays it will have a detrimental affect on their attainment

    6. Success Catching up work from missed lessons Working during cancelled lessons Always completing homework Keep work organised Meet all deadlines Adhering to dress code with ID cards 15 students re-sitting year because they didnt work hard enough

    7. Academy Students Have less study time than normal students Need to be superbly organised and good managers of time Very tough to get work / sport balance Higher risk of underachievement. Tiring because of physical demands Incredibly rewarding.

    8. Staff absence Lessons are not covered Staff expected to advise students of their absence if known in advance Work is set and put on classroom door and /or on notice board outside the 6th form office Students expected to work independently outside lessons and use time wisely. If concerned re staff absence please contact me.

    9. AS Levels Students complete 2 modules in first year Some subjects take one module exam in January and 2nd in June and others sit both in June. Jan AS results = Middle of March Grade A, B, C, D,E all Pass. U Grade = fail Very large Step up from GCSE - Time/ Effort / Attitude of vital importance Extra Hours study essential (4/5 hours per subject per week outside of lessons) ALL module grades now go on UCAS Form new 2010/11

    10. BTEC Courses All Coursework no exams Can usually have second attempts to upgrade work but ONLY IF DEADLINES met. Extended Diploma- 18 units Diploma 12 Units Subsidiary Diploma - 6 Units Grade Pass(E), Merit(C), Distinction(A) Students should be aiming to achieve the highest possible grades

    11. Re-Sits Maths, English Lang, Science For students who achieved less than C grade. Re-sit lessons in all three should be on timetables. Can only re-sit here if the board and course are the same.

    12. Enrichment Programme Mentor Programme All students have a Mentor allocated. Meet every 3 to 4 weeks at 3.40. Higher Education Tutorials Commence after February term on Wednesday period 5.

    13. Enrichment Programme (in Free Study Time) Extra curricular sport Wednesday 3.40pm Work Experience CSLA in block D recommended if only taking 3 A levels. Can lead to HSLA in Year 13. Community Service Programme- 40 Hours over year = 1 hour per week. Can include lesson support, extra curricular support, student mentoring, supporting departments in range of ways. 50% time can be completed out of school.

    14. Preparation For Post 18 Majority (around 85%) go onto Higher Education 15% seek Employment A few students return to improve grades in Year 14

    15. Post 18 University Employment and /or training ALL year 12 students follow the same Higher Education programme which commences in Feb.

    16. Why do all students follow the same programme? Make an informed choice Research careers and qualifications needed Many skills for higher education application similar to those needed for employment application Easier to opt out than opt in

    17. Higher Education Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) system: one central application scheme for vast majority of Higher Education courses. Higher Education Fairs: Olympia and Queen Mary

    18. Higher Education (Continued) Open Days and Campus visits By July - end of Year 12 will have completed some of their UCAS form and made initial choice of courses Course choice MUST reflect expected grades visit UNI if possible School deadline for completion of UCAS forms is October Half Term in Year 13

    19. Non UCAS Students All students will have opportunity for a careers interview but non UCAS students have additional interview with Connexions staff

    20. Non Ucas (continued) Sept-Nov Year 13 specially designed Jobseekers course led by Ms Jarvis/Ms Glendinning Barking Abbey Careers Advisors. Testimonial developed

    21. Summer Schools & Saturday Schools London School of Economics- Psychology, Gov & Politics, History and Sociology London Metropolitan University- Business, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Psychology, Sociology Saturday School Year 13 from October to March Information is sent out via email. Some require payment.

    22. Bursary Payments Deadline for applications was yesterday. Second deadline December. Anyone on Free School Meals (FSM) eligible or students in care Minimal pot of money divided by number in whole Borough on FSM. Amount paid may decrease in January if more students become eligible. Contract signed by parents and student lateness, absence and lack of work, behaviour all affect payments.

    23. Monitoring Target Grades set using ALIS (A level Information System) Student will be measured against this grade as minimum expected target. Staff will feedback on how to improve work to expected or higher standard. The role of the Head of Year/ Assistant Head of Year Attendance and Punctuality (CMIS) Referral Events students interviewed Interviews of students with Teachers/ HOD/ HOY/Parents

    28. Parental Support Is Essential for Success Post 16 Help students maintain motivation with encouragement and support. Help monitor that extra time 4/5 hours per subject per week Help students make that transition from GCSE to Post 16 study. NO HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME.

    29. Parental Support continued First exams in January. Help students find time over Christmas period for revision. Make sure they have leisure time Use eportal system to monitor www.babbey.bardaglea.org.uk

YEAR 12 - IMPORTANT DATES Summary 2011/12 December - Issue of Year 12 Reports Mon 9th Jan AS Exams begin no study leave Thurs 8th March AS results Wed 21 March Year 12 Parents Evening Fri 30 March Mentoring Day Mon 14 May Year 12 exams and study leave starts Monday 11 June A2 Work commences July Year 12 Reports issued Thurs 16 August AS results Day
