CCST - Science and Technology in the State’s Interest • Not for profit, 501(c)3 comprised of over 200 of CA’s top talent • Committed to serving the State in all aspects of S&T • Sustaining institutions: UC, CSU, CCC, Stanford, USC, Caltech • Affiliate members: LBNL, LLNL, Sandia, SLAC, NASA Ames, JPL • Comprised of: • 16 Board Members • 30 Council Members • 136 Senior Fellows • 12 Cal Teachers Advisory Council Members • 10 S&T Policy Fellows • And includes: • 5 Nobel Laureates • 81 National Academies’ Members • 11 National Medal of Science or Technology • 6 National Board Certified Teachers

Anne Marie Bergen received 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching • Peg Cagle named Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow at DOE • Caleb Cheung was one of five winners of STEMposium’s video contest to celebrate STEM education • Diana Herrington was named the 2011 State Science Fair Teacher of the Year • Lewis Chappelear was named the 2011 Florida FIRST Robotics Competition Teacher of the Year Anne Marie Bergen

California Education Innovation Consortium • Comprised of stakeholders from K-16 education, business, government, NGOs, and others • A 21st century learning environment needs to be created, grounded in digital learning • Requires redefining classroom environment, changing preparation and professional development for teachers, and more

  7. Digitally Enhanced Learning • We propose that California’s 21st century learning environment be grounded in digital learning. A 21st century learning environment needs to be created, grounded in digital learning • There are four foundational pillars that comprise this transformation to incubators of learning and innovation : • THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT • THE TEACHER • THE INSTITUTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE • PARTNERSHIPS

Digitally Enhanced Learning • THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT: redefine the classroom as a mobile learning environment, students have an active role in their learning experience, resulting in more student engagement • THE TEACHER: foster an innovative learning environment where teachers are working alongside instead of in front of their students in a collaborative environment • THE INSTITUTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE: ensure keeps pace with the digital world by ensuring that students and teachers have ready access • PARTNERSHIPS: public-private partnerships are a critical component for the development and sustainability of the envisioned 21st century learning ecosystems

Every student should be permitted and encouraged to use personal digital tools in the classroom to complement his or her education. • ACCESS: • Every child should have access to broadband capability. • Every child is permitted and encouraged to use personal digital tools in the class • EDUCATION CODE • Enhance those which help, remove those that hinder • STANDARDS • The 2010 California state standards for Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Literacy in Social Science and Science should be completed. • A-G entrance requirements for admission into CSU and UC campuses should be aligned to the 21st century workplace • California credentialing process should be adjusted to better reflect technology presence in classroom.

  10. Next Steps • Liaison with other initiatives – • Education recommendations through Cal TAC and the California STEM Learning Network (CSLNet) • Convene the Standards Commissions • Think Long – possible connection • State Legislature, Departments and Agencies
