  1. Classification-The Kingdoms How much do you know about our modern classification system? Click on the pictures to the right to learn about each modern kingdom! Take the Quiz Standards

Kentucky Teaching Standards: Core Content For Assessment SC-HS-3.4.7 Students will: • classify organisms into groups based on similarities; • infer relationships based on internal and external structures and chemical processes. Biological classifications are based on how organisms are related. Organisms are classified into a hierarchy of groups and subgroups based on similarities that reflect their relationships. Species is the most fundamental unit of classification. Different species are classified by the comparison and analysis of their internal and external structures and the similarity of their chemical processes.

Terms with which you should be familiar… • Carolus Linnaeus- father of modern taxonomy; created a 5 kingdom system into which all organisms are individually placed • (click here for more information on Mr. Linnaeus) • Kingdom -least specific grouping; general breakdown of an organism’s place in classification • Taxonomy- the branch of Science in which organisms are grouped based on traits, characteristics, and/or evolutionary histories • (for more information on taxonomy, visit NCBI-Taxonomy)

  5. Kingdom: Plantae • multicellular plants • photosynthesis= energy • more than 350,000 species known (such as flowers, mosses, ferns, trees)

Kingdom: Bacterium Archaebacteria • Unicellular • Reproduce by binary fission • Live in extreme environments such as a hot spring or mammalian intestines • Very basic Eubacteria • “eu”=true • unicellular • reproduce by binary fission • most bacteria (complex) that affect our lives: • those that cause tooth decay • food poisoning • turn milk into yogurt • greatest number of living things on the planet

Kingdom: Protista • mostly single celled eukaryotes (possess membrane bound organelles in cells as well as a nucleus) • some multicellular- example: giant sea kelp • look like plants but are not because they lack specialized tissues • more than 50,000 species- everything eukaryotic that does not fit into fungus/plant/animal group is classified into the protist kingdom

  8. Kingdom: Animalia • eukaryotic, multicellular • most have symmetrical body organization • move about the environment • obtain nutrients through ingestion of other species (plants, fungi, other animals)

  9. Kingdom: Fungi • both unicellular and multicellular • absorbs nutrients from the environment, does not actually ingest them • 100,000+ species- examples: mushrooms, molds, mildews, yeasts
