  2. ARVN • Originated in Vietnamese military raised by French • Grew during 2nd Indochina War (1971) • To over 1 million men & women • Eleven army divisions • Deployed in 4 Corps Tactical Zones

  3. Led by President Nguyen Van Thieu • Enemies- Communist (North Vietnam) • Allies- Americans • Wanted ARVN’s to seek battle • US supplied 821,000 South Vietnamese • M-16 rifles, training, skills, equipment

  4. Ap BacJanuary 2, 1963Mekong, Delta • Purpose: • Capture communist radio center • Strengths: • 1 ARVN regiment w/ protection, weapons, & air support • 51 US Advisers • 514th Viet Cong Battalion- 400 men

  5. Result: • Showed little aggression and lost • ARVN Losses: • 65 killed, 100 wounded • US Losses: • 3 advisers killed, 6 wounded • 5 helicopters destroyed, 11 damaged

  6. Tactics • HQ and the Delta • Guarded Saigon w/ III Corps & US troops Bien Hoa & Yung Tau w/ IV Corps • Jets and Supplies • US & South Korea defended big ports • Central Highlands • Key area gaurded by US, South Korea, and ARVN I & II Corps
