Key Words: conclusion, generalization Notes/examples: • Readers use text clues and own experiences to draw conclusions and make generalizations. • Conclusion = a smart guess about ideas that are NOT stated in the text • Generalization = a broad statement that is true MOST of the time • KEY WORDS TO LOOK OUT FOR: so & often

  3. Conclusion or Generalization? Most rabbits are soft. Since there is mud on the carpet and mud on Jason’s shoes, I think Jason got the carpet muddy.

Key Words: Helping/Linking Verbs Notes/examples: • Action Verb: a word that shows an action or what the subject of the sentence does EXAMPLE ~ Bob created a mosaic for the art show. • Helping Verb: DOES NOT show action, but works with the action verb in the sentence. EXAMPLE ~ As Lisa was wrenching off the heavy cover, we were watching the door.

  10. Helping vs. LinkingKnow the Difference??? • A HELPING verb HELPS an action verb • ex: You arejumping too high. • A LINKING verb LINKS the subject with a word that tells more about it. It tells what someone or somethig is, was, or will be. • ex: The coach looks happy today.
