  1. Copper Conundrum 6-7A Chemistry

  2. Purpose • Our purpose as a company is to reclaim the greatest amount of copper possible from a solution of copper (II) chloride using a reaction involving aluminum. • We hypothesize that if we have the exact amount of aluminum needed, we should have no excess aluminum remaining in the solution, and we will have 100% yield of pure copper from our reaction.

  3. Procedure • Carefully measure CuCl2and Aluminium • Combine CuCl2 and Aluminium in beaker • Find the mass of filter paper • Filter through filter paper into Erlenmeyer flask • Wash the solid, and let it dry • Measure dry mass • Subtract mass of filter paper from dry mass

  4. Measurements • 274.5mL CuCl2 • 3.07g Al • .94508g filter paper (average) • 7.5092g dry mass • 5.6191g (dry mass-2(filter paper))

  5. Percent Yield • Actual/Theoretical*100% • 5.6191/4.36*100% • 128.9%
