  2. Outline of this Section 1 Cor. 3:1-4 Paul & Apollos: You think it is all about you! 1 Cor. 3:5-9 Parable of the field & the farmers 1 Cor. 3:10-17 Parable of the building & the builders 1 Cor. 3:18-4:7 Paul, Apollos, Cephas: It is really about Christ! 1 Cor. 4:8-16 A Concluding Personal Appeal from Their Wise Leader

  3. 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, 3 because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers? 4 For whenever someone says, “I’m with Paul,” and another, “I’m with Apollos,” are you not unspiritual people?

  4. 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. The Corinthians thought that they, more than other people, were ready for deeper truths & teachings because of their giftedness

  5. 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. The Corinthians thought that their devotion to certain leaders showed their wisdom

  6. 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. Paul intentionally withheld teaching from them because of their divisions & relational brokenness

  7. Conclusions • We can be (often are) self-deceived in our evaluation of our own maturity • Our giftedness is not the primary qualification for or hindrance to ministry • Relational health is a key indicator of our progress in God’s wisdom (the “deeper things”) • Relational dysfunction will impede our ability to grasp & absorb biblical teachings • Teaching & knowledge are very important

  8. 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field…

  11. 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Their roles were assigned by God, not man

  12. 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Their roles were held up as equal in value

  15. 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 Galatians 2:11-1411 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned. 12 For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party. 13 Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.14 But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephasin front of everyone, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?” 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field…

  20. 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will

  21. 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. 14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved; yet it will be like an escape through fire. 16 Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s sanctuary and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s sanctuary, God will destroy him; for God’s sanctuary is holy, and that is what you are.

  22. 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will Paul was the “wise architect builder”

  23. 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it.11For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will Later builders must be careful how they build

But each one must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will Later builders must build in accord with the foundation

  25. 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. The inspection/judgment day will reveal the quality of each builder’s work

  26. 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.
