  2. Realistic Fiction has characters and events that are like people and events in real life As you read, look for • A setting that is familiar to most readers • Realistic characters and events

  3. Character’s Traits & Motivations • A story is made up of characters, a setting, and plot events. • A character’s TRAITS show what he or she is like. • A character’s MOTIVATIONS are the reasons he or she acts a certain way. • Thinking about a character’s traits and motivations will help you figure out why a character took a certain action in a story.

  4. Character’s Traits & Motivations • James had been bragging for weeks about his science project. He was certain that his model volcano would win first prize, and he told everyone so. Two days before the science fair, he went to his classmate Paul’s house. Paul had completed the most amazing model of the solar system that James had ever seen. It was much better than his own project. “You’re not going to enter the science fair with that, are you?” James said. “A model solar system is so boring!”

  6. pact A pact is an agreement between people or countries in which they promise to do certain things. Remember our pact, we will never eat pizza again! Describe a pact you could make with a friend.

  7. queasy The motion of the boat made her feelqueasy. Which would make you feel more queasy, competing in a spelling bee or diving off the high board into a swimming pool? Why? If you feel queasy, you have a sick feeling in your stomach.

  8. foisted Because the students would not stop talking, they had extra homework foisted on them. How would you feel if friends of your family came and foisted their four year-old child on you for the entire day? If something is foisted on you, it is given to you whether you want it or not.

  9. venture I ventured into the boat even though there was a terrible storm coming. What new venture might you like to start someday? Why? A new venture is a project that is exciting and even risky.

  10. annoyed Mosquitoes buzzing in my ears is quite annoying. Describe a time when you were annoyed by a sound? Explain why. To be annoyed means to be somewhat angry about something.

  11. depriving The little girl was deprived of sleep. What is one effect of depriving a garden of water? If someone is depriving you of something, the person is keeping you from having it.
