  1. What Happened to the Sanctuary Doctrine in the Last 35 Years? Part 3 Richard M. Davidson Gospel Study Group October 21, 2016

  2. The Good News of Yom Kippur • Personal Experience (continued): • Prayer meeting on the Psalms: Psalm 7:8 Psalm 26:1 Psalm 35:24 Psalm 43:1 “Judge me”! David welcomed the judgment!

  3. The Good News of Yom Kippur • How could David pray this prayer? • Did he understand the heinousness of his sin, the seriousness of the judgment? • Yes: Psalm 51:3-4 • But he knew something else! Vs. 7 • Hyssop was the agent for sprinkling blood • Righteousness by Faith: “Cover me with the blood of the Lamb!”

  4. The Good News of Yom Kippur Seven Reasons the Judgment is Good News 1. Christ is our Substitute. Isaiah 61:10 Zechariah 3:4 • We are covered by the robe of His righteousness • “We should not be anxious about what Christ and God think of us, but about what God thinks of Christ, our Substitute.” (2 SM 32-33)

  5. The Good News of Yom Kippur • Christ is our Substitute (continued) • Personal experience at the Seminary • Ellen White Christ’s Object Lessons 155: “Those who accept the Saviour, however sincere their conversion, should never be taught to say or to feel that they are saved.” But look later in same paragraph!: we may “give ourselves to Christ and know that He accepts us”!

  6. The Good News of Yom Kippur • Christ is our Substitute (continued) • Personal experience as a Pastor: no assurance of salvation • claim promises: John 6:47; 1 John 5:13 • Steps to Christ, 62: “If you give yourself to Him, and accept Him as your Saviour, then, sinful as your life may have been, for His sake you are accounted righteous. Christ’s character stands in place of your character, and you are accepted before God just as if you had not sinned.”

  7. The Good News of Yom Kippur 2. Christ is our Lawyer (Defense Attorney!) • I John 2:1 • He has never lost a case that has been committed to him (John 18:9) • He pleads our case, intercedes for us (Heb. 7:25) • Picture of heavenly courtroom: • We are not alone: Our lawyer has His arm around us, and defends us! • Isaiah 49:16

  8. The Good News of Yom Kippur • Christ is the Star Witness in our behalf. • Rev 3:14 “the faithful and true witness” • Christ testifies to the heavenly jury of our repentance and acceptance of His pardon • Christ silences our accuser, Satan, in the heavenly trial (Rev 12:10)

  9. The Good News of Yom Kippur 4. Christ is the Judge! • John 5:22 • The Father presides (Dan 7:9-10) but Christ gives the verdict as our elder brother! • Not a stern cold judge, but a loving gracious God (Ezekiel 18:30-32) • Multiple functions in one person • How can we lose in such a situation?!

  10. The Good News of Yom Kippur • The first four point are the basis of our salvation = justification by faith. • Justification = “just as if we had never sinned”; totally based upon the blood of Jesus; He paid the price for our sins and covers us with His righteousness. • But more!

  11. The Good News of Yom Kippur 5. Christ is our Purifier. • Lev 16:30 • Mal 3:2-3 • Ezek 36:25-27 “heart transplant”! • God does the cleansing! God takes responsibility for the cleansing! • God promises both motivation and power

  12. The Good News of Yom Kippur 5. Christ is our Purifier (continued). • We are saved totally by grace, but we are judged according to our works • Chiastic structure of Leviticus:

  13. The Good News of Yom Kippur 5. Christ our Purifier (continued) • Basis of salvation is blood; fruit is holy life • Efficacy of blood shown by holy fruit

  14. The Good News of Yom Kippur • Christ is our Vindicator. Daniel 7:22: “judgment in favor of the saints” In the judgment, God vindicates us from the false charges of Satan (Revelation 12:10)

  15. The Good News of Yom Kippur • Christ is our Vindicator. Daniel 7:22: “judgment in favor of the saints” In the judgment, God vindicates us from the false charges of Satan (Revelation 12:10)

  16. The Good News of Yom Kippur • God vindicates His Holy Name! • Ezekiel 36:22-23 (ESV) • Investigative judgment is not to reveal to God who are His; He knows (2 Tim 2:19) • It is for the sake of the on-looking universe. • He will vindicate Himself partially through His cleansed people: Ezek 36:23 • Also through the wicked: Ezek. 38:16, 23

  17. The Good News of Yom Kippur • The ultimate Good News is about God! • For eternity we will sing the Song of Moses and the Lamb: (Rev 15:3): “Just and true are Your ways, O King of the Saints!” • The whole universe will rejoice in this revelation: Rev 16:5, 7; 19:1-2 • Yom Kippur in Jerusalem—sound of shofar!
