Join Jean McFeely, M.Sc., C.S.C.S., for an informative presentation on healthy shoulders. Explore the basic anatomy, including the clavicle, scapula, and humerus, and the key muscles involved in shoulder movement, such as the rotator cuff muscles and others that connect the scapula to the axial skeleton. Learn about common shoulder injuries like rotator cuff tendonitis, tears, impingement syndrome, labrum tears, and frozen shoulder. Discover effective exercise solutions and training techniques to maintain shoulder health and enhance mobility.

  2. Basic Anatomy Bones: Clavicle Scapula Humerus Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  3. Muscles involved with shoulder movement: • Latisiums dorsi • Pectoralis major • Pectoralis minor All of these muscles originate on the axial skeleton and work on the shoulder. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  4. …muscles continued… • Deltoid • Teres major Muscles that originate on the scapula and attach to the humerus. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  5. Muscles of the Rotator Cuff • Subscapularis • Supraspinatus • Infraspinatus • Teres Minor These muscles act to cup the “ball” in the “socket”. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  6. …and muscles, one more time… • Levator Scapula • Trapezius • Rhomboids • Serratus Anterior • Serratus Posterior Muscles that attach scapula to the axial skeleton. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  7. Other Important Stuff • Glenoid cavity • Glenoid labrum • Bursae • Spinal nerve roots Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  8. Biomechanical Ballet Shoulder movement requires the precise coordination of muscles. Scapulothoracic Rhythm • 0-30° • 30-90° • 90°+ Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  9. Common Shoulder Injuries Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  10. Rotator Cuff Tendonitis • Inflammation of the tendons of the rotator cuff. • Microscopic tears that initiate an inflammatory response. • Subacromial bursa also become irritated. • Very common with repeated overhead activity. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  11. Rotator Cuff Tear • Partial thickness • Full thickness • Sudden or insidious onset. • Fraying of edges makes repair difficult at times. • Think of a frayed rope. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  12. Impingement Syndrome Pinching of the rotator cuff and the subacromial bursa, between the head of the humerus and the acromion process of the scapula. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  13. Labrum Tears • Bankhart Tear • SLAP Tear May develop gradually for a variety of reasons. • Excessive motion at GH joint. • Sharp biceps contraction. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  14. Frozen Shoulder Condition where the shoulder joint capsule becomes thickened and contracts around the joint, thus limiting the range of motion. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  15. Separated Shoulder • Type 1 • Type 2 • Type 3 • Type 4 – 6 AC bump? Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  16. Exercise solutions for troublesome shoulders • Passive & Active ROM • Flexibility • Scapulothoracic rhythm training • Strength Training Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  17. Questions? Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.

  18. Thank you all for coming Thank you for coming out to this evenings presentation. Jean Mc Feely M.Sc, C.S.C.S.
