A Hem begins at layout Knowing how long to make a pair of pants begins at the pattern fitting. Measure your inseam from crotch to desired length. Add the amount you need for your hem to know your cutting length.
To make sure your pants are the correct length: Cutting length = Finished Inseam Length + ¼” turn + 1” hem width
Let’s try it: IF you would like a 1” hem AND your finished inseam measures 32 1/4” long. How many inches of length do we need? 32 ¼” finished inseam+ ¼” turn + 1” hem = 33 ½” inseam cutting length I + 1/4” turn + 1” = C
Let’s try again: • 32 1/2” Finished Inseam, 1/2” Hem • 28” Finished Inseam, 2 1/4” Hem • 30 ½” Finished Inseam30 ½”, 1 ½” Hem FORMULA I + 1/4” turn + H = C 1. 32 ½” + ¼” + 1/2” = 2. 28” + ¼” + 2 ¼ ” = 3. 30 ½” + ¼” + 1 ½” = 33 1/4” 30 1/2” 32 1/4”
