Throughresearch,public policy, andtechnical assistance we support national, state, and local initiatives that add significantly more school time to help children meet the demands of the 21st century.

  4. Getting Your Attention In New York and Denver, adding 20 school days for no additional cost • Adding 300 hours (25% more time) for 10% additional cost in Massachusetts • In Arizona, adding 20 school days and having 167 school days BEFORE the state test for 7% additional cost

Teachers at Brooklyn Generation Have Multiple Roles National Center on Time & Learning. 2012 Foundation Course Teachers Intensive Teacher Team Studio Course Teachers Primary Role is to Teach Foundation Courses: Integrated Algebra & Geometry, Biology, Humanities, Physics Primary role is to provide college & career counseling throughout the year, rotating through each grade Primary Role is to Teach Studio Courses: Fitness, music, fine arts, technology world languages, science studio Secondary Role is to Teach a Studio Class: IEP/ELL pull-out services, technology, fitness & nutrition, fine arts & music, foreign language Secondary Role is Administrative: Attendance, data specialist, Title I & compliance reporting, coverage planning, athletic directing

Volusia County – Reallocating Sacred Cows to Create More Learning Time • The Key: Title I Reallocation – moved funds away from class size reduction, supplementary technology program, school-based allocations Started with small pilot • One school, 5 teachers  used $35,000 of Title V • Teachers and Administrators saw success and wanted to expand • One whole school – dipped into Title I  $350,000 Success breeds success  9 schools, whole school, additional hour • 20% of district’s Title I funds go to Plus One schools National Center on Time & Learning. 2012

Staffing Choices at Edwards Middle School National organization that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day for children in low income communities National Center on Time & Learning. 2012 • 1:30 to 4:10 Monday – Thursday • Citizen Schools: • Partner staff provides all 6th graders with 10 hours per week of targeted math and apprenticeships • 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Teachers: • All teachers work in small groups with 7th and 8th graders • Some teachers teach enrichment classes – dance, orchestra, team athletics, musical theater • Teachers can opt-in or opt-out of some of the additional time
