  3. Introduction • Lubbock (2007) • 4 cases of primary and secondary Syphilis • 372 cases of Gonorrhea • 1,091 cases of Chlamydia • Texas (2005 & 2006) • 71,621 cases of Chlamydia in • Cases increased the next year to 75,319

  4. Introduction • U.S.A. (2007) • 48% of high school students have had sexual intercourse • 15% of these students have had four or more sex partners • 39% of the high school students did not use condoms

  5. Introduction • Texas has an average of 2.59% of teen pregnancies • Lubbock County has a 3.3% average • U.S.A has an average of 12% pregnancies • adolescents aged 15-19

  6. Problem • The Lubbock Independent School District currently has no sex education program in place • Some information about sex is mentioned in health classes • in a abstinence-only-until-marriage approach • These classes fail to mention other information such as safe sex

  7. Plan of Action • We feel that there should be a sex education program implemented in the Lubbock Independent School District.  • Amanda Elredge • Texas Tech University Health Educator • present to the L.I.S.D. School Board to implement a sex education program

  8. Conclusion • Our goal is for LISD to implement a sex education program • Effects • Sexually active students will be more knowledgeable • Decrease the rate of STIs • Decrease the rate of teen pregnancy
