  1. Some Roman emperors ruled wisely. Some Roman emperors were corrupt. And some Roman emperors were insane!

  2. One Roman emperor, Nero, murdered his mother and his wife. He was suspected of causing the great fire that destroyed half of Rome in 64 B.C.

  3. Many Roman emperors were murdered by their own soldiers. Since an emperor ruled for life, only death ended his reign.

  4. Rome faced other problems besides corrupt emperors. The empire was becoming too vast for one ruler. In addition, invaders kept attacking the empire’s borders.

  5. Large groups of German tribes invaded the western portion of the Roman Empire in the 5th century A.D. The Romans were too weak to stop them.

  6. The Western Roman Empire officially ended in 476, when a German general named Odoacer forced the last Roman emperor to give up his throne.

  7. But aside from conquering parts of three continents, the Roman Empire is remembered for many reasons.

  8. Law: The Romans created legal concepts that still influence people today.

  9. The Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, and Romanian languages evolved from the Latin language. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire.

  10. The Romans were excellent builders. They even invented concrete.
