  1. YOUR REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • All human life results from the union of 2 cells. • 1 from the mother, and 1 from the father!

  2. REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Consists of body organs that are involved in the production of offspring. • Organs of the male and female reproductive systems are NOT the same!

  3. THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Includes the different organs involved in the production, storage, and release of sperm.

  4. THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Urethra – Tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, also carries semen. • Penis – Male external sexual organ. • Testes – Testicles are 2 small glands that produce sperm. • Scrotum – A sac of skin that contains the testes.

  5. THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Epididymis – Network of tubing in which the sperm mature and are stored temporarily. • Vas Deferens – Tubes that extend from each epididymis to the urethra. • Ejaculation – Action that forces the semen through the urethra and out of the body.

  6. THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Has 3 important functions. • Produce and store egg cells • Allow fertilization to occur • Nourish and protect the fertilized egg, until it is ready to live outside the female’s body.

THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Ovaries – Contain eggs and hormones that cause the eggs to mature. • Fallopian Tube – Carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. • Uterus – Shelters and nourishes the fetus. • Endometrium – Lining of the uterus. • Cervix – Opening of the uterus. • Vagina – Muscular passageway from the uterus to the outside of the body.

  8. THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE • When a female reaches puberty, hormones cause egg cells to mature. • The ovaries produce 1 mature egg cell each month (ovulation).

  9. THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE • The uterus thickens in preparation to receive and begin to nourish a fertilized egg. • If fertilization does not occur the thickened lining breaks down and the material is expelled from the body (Menstruation).

  10. THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE • Menstruation – The flow of the lining material out of the female body, usually lasts 5-7 days. • Menstrual cycle – The time from one menstruation to another, a cycle is usually about 28 days.

  11. FERTILIZATION • When a male sperm cell enters a female vagina, it travels to a fallopian tube. • Fertilization may occur if there is a mature egg waiting.

  12. FERTILIZATION • If the egg is fertilized, it moves to the uterus and attaches itself to the lining. • The mother’s body provides the baby with food and oxygen • After 40 weeks the baby is ready to be born. • It passes through the vagina until it is outside the body.

  13. PROPER CARE FOR YOUR REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Bathe or shower daily to keep your external reproductive organs clean.

  14. Avoid underwear/ clothing that is too tight. Wear protective gear when playing contact sports. Self exams of testes for lumps, swelling, or soreness, and have regular checkups. Cleanliness is especially important during menstruation. Sanitary pads and tampons should be changed often.
