  2. Acts 22:30-23:10 - Sanhedrin Sophistry • Acts 23:11 – Encouraged by the Lord Himself • Acts 23:12-22 – Jewish Plot to Harm Paul • Acts 23-23-35 – Paul Escorted to Caesarea Acts Chapter 23 Outline

  3. Roman Commander handed Paul over to Sanhedrin Council • Paul said, “Brother I have fulfilled my duty to God …” • High Priest Ananias had Paul struck on mouth for his words • Paul responded in anger out of a desire for justice • Paul said, “God will strike you, you white washed wall!” • Oral law treated one innocent until proven guilty (Lev19:15) • Paul apologized for he knew it was contrary to the Law to speak evil of the High Priest (Ex.22:28) • Might also be an indicator of Paul’s poor vision (Eph. 6:11, Gal 4:15) Acts 22:30-23:10 Sanhedrin Sophistry

  4. Paul is inspired to speak of the Resurrection • Sanhedrin was part Pharisee & part Sadducee • Paul was a Pharisee (Phil. 3:5) & knew their beliefs • Paul boldly spoke of resurrection in general & Jesus’ Resurrection in particular • Resulted in a Dispute between Sadducees & Pharisees • Remember: Riot broke out because of the Gentile issue • Violent Argument ensued between the two factions • Pharisees found not fault in Paul (maybe an angel/spirit spoke to him) • Commander had troops remove Paul to the prison barracks Acts 22:30-23:10 Sanhedrin Sophistry

  5. It had been a Hard day for Paul • That nigh Jesus stood by his side • Take courage – “cheer up & don’t be afraid” • “As you have Testified about Me in Jerusalem” • So (Gk. Houto“in the same way”) you must testify of me in Rome” (i.e. as a prisoner) • Paul desired to go to Rome & Jesus makes it clear that he will witness for His Lord in Rome also – this was Paul’s Destiny! Acts 23:11Encouraged by the Lord

  6. 40 Jews vowed to Kill or not eat Paul in their Hatred • Asked Sanhedrin to ask Commanders to have Paul Appear before them again to settled the matter – 40 would kill him • Paul’s sister’s son overheard their Plot & told Paul • Paul called one of the Centurion’s & asked that the young man be taken to the Commander with an important Message • Paul’s Nephew was taken to the Commander Immediately • Commander talked with the young man privately, telling him of the plot to kill Paul if the Commander granted Sanhedrin’s request • Commander released the young man swearing him to secrecy Acts 23:12-22Jewish Plot to Harm Paul

  7. Commander knew if Paul (Roman Citizen) was assassinated while in his custody, he could himself be executed • Commander (Tribune) sends Paul to Felix under heavy Guard • Felix (happy) is Roman Governor of Judea located in Caesarea • Paul’s escort due to depart at 9:00 pm was Huge! • 200 Foot Soldiers • 70 horsemen • 200 spearmen • Paul was given a horse & probably disguised as a soldier Acts 23-23-35Paul Escorted to Caesarea

  8. Tribune wrote a Letter to Felix about Paul • Believed to be Actual copy of letter in Acts 23:26-30 NOTE: name of the Tribune is Claudius Lysias (Greek) • He puts Paul in a good light (read letter again) • The 40 Jews were in trouble because of their vow to not eat • Soldiers overnighted in Antipatris (See photo) • Roman Colony * Military Station • Next day foot soldiers returned to Fortress of Antonia (Garrison) • Calvary delivered Paul & letter to Felix • Felix agreed to hear Paul’s case & had him guarded in Herod’s Palace Acts 23-23-35Paul Escorted to Caesarea

  9. Herod's City When Herod the Great became king (37-4 B.C.), he rebuilt Aphek and named the city Antipatris after his father Antipater. After Paul's arrest in Jerusalem, the Romans spirited Paul out of the city to avoid a plot on the apostle's life (Acts 23). The contingent of troops brought him to Antipatris (about halfway) before continuing on the next day to Caesarea. The city was destroyed in 363 A.D. by an earthquake.
