History Duringthelate 18th and early 19th centuriestherewasanIndustrialRevolution in Britain.Coalwasused to fuelit and towns and citiesgrew in size and importancearoundthecoalfieldsoftheMidlands and theNorth. Theinventionof spinning machines led to a thriving textile industry. Itwascentred in Yorkshire and Lancashire. Thesteel and shipbuildingindustriesfollowed and by the early yearsofthe 20the centurytheMidlands, theNorthofEngland, South Wales and thelowlandsof Scotland were heavilyindustrialized.
