4. Who do I ask for help? The Help Desk on Floor 1 Library Advisors, also on Floor 1 – spot the green t-shirts! IT Services help desk on Floor 1, for help with printing or PC problems Contact your subject librarian if you have subject-specific enquiries

Library facilities Different study areas to meet your needs Quiet study areas, and 2 silent reading rooms Informal group study areas where you can also take hot or cold drinks and cold food, floors 1 and 2 PCs and wireless access to the Internet in designated areas Postgraduate PC cluster on Floor 3 of the main Library, in the extension building

9. Note especially… Main Library is open 8.30 a.m. to 12 midnight every day – longer in term 3 Staffed services are available 8.30 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. every day, apart from a few public holidays Learning Grid – Library facility in University House – open all day every day except 25th December!

Borrowing books - key facts… Taught postgraduates may borrow up to 20 books at one time, and 25 in term 3 Also 2books from the Short Loan collection (overnight or for a weekend) In addition you may borrow 2 DVDs at a time, if you find an interesting one… available in Short Loan Standard loan = 8 weeks 3-day loan copies – clearly labelled Watch out for fines Short Loan fines are the highest - £1 per hour or part of hour Please bring the books back on time to avoid fines!
11. Self-service borrowing You need your University card to borrow a book Use self-service machines to borrow and return books (check out and check in) Staff at the help desk will assist if you have any problems

12. More tips on borrowing books

    Reminders - we will send a message to your Warwick e-mail one day before your book is due back Recalls – we also e-mail you if another student has placed a hold on a book which you have borrowed – you will have one week to return it, if it is a standard loan copy You can extend a loan by renewing your book online, as long as no other student has placed a hold on it

14. What if someone else has the book you need? You can place a hold on the book, online We ask the other reader to return it within one week Check your University e-mails to see when the book is available to pick up It will be shelved in the Short Loan area for you to collect
15. How to obtain books or articles not available at Warwick SCONUL Access scheme – obtain a card from the Library help desk to visit most university libraries in the UK The card is free! Document Supply, or inter-library loans – the Economics Department may authorise a few free requests, otherwise it costs £10 to borrow a book, £8 to obtain an article
16. Your Library account – keep track of your book loans and avoid paying fines!
17. Your Library Account Shows which books you have borrowed and when they are due back Tells you which books you have on hold – reservations Gives details of any fines owing You can pay online if the fine is £1 or more Check it regularly and you need never incur a fine at all!

19. Finding material on a reading list – specific books, articles in journals etc. Use the Library catalogue - The complete list of books and journal titles held in print or electronically at Warwick http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk

    Search for key words from the title, plus the name of one or both authors, e.g. Obstfeld international macroeconomics OR you may search specifically for the author, or the exact title
21. Enter an author’s name and some key words from the title
22. Click on the link to the title – this one is available online and in print
23. How would you find this book? Click on the “Location” link to find which floor the book is on – most of your books will be on Floor 5 Staff on Floor 1 of the Library will also assist you
24. Other book locations? Don’t forget… Main Library Pamphlets – small books kept in boxes, near other books on the same subject Main Library Oversize - tall books shelved separately, near the normal sized books Reference - dictionaries, encyclopedias and other books not for loan, shelved separately on the same subject floor as books for loan Short Loan – Floor 1 Learning Grid – reference copies of textbooks, in University House
25. Chapter in a book –(Author of chapter) – SERJEANT, T, 1982, Chapter - The end of four big inflations in (Book editor and chapter) R.E. HALL, Inflation: causes and effects, Chicago, University of Chicago Press Search the Library catalogue for the book, NOT the chapter details which appear first, e.g. a keyword search for: Hall inflation causes effects
26. Article in a journal:(Authors) BALAND, J. and ROBINSON, J. A., 2008. (Article title) Land and power: theory and evidence from Chile. (Journal title) American Economic Review volume 98 issue (5) pages 1737-1765 Search the Library catalogue for the journal title, e.g. American Economic Review – then find the year, issue number and article required We may have the journal online, or in print – the catalogue will provide all the information which you need
27. How to find a journal article in AmericanEconomic Review Enter the title of the journal and set the parameters of the search to Title, and Journals, to be specific. This saves you time!
28. We take this journal in print and online. Click the 2nd link to access it online
29. Check which year you need, then select the correct link, e.g. EconLit, which is current:
30. Select the correct year, then the issue you require, to find the article on your reading list
31. Full text of the article is available
32. Scanned extracts for your module reading Additional extracts or articles may be scanned and put online to help you find them Access these through the Library website Select Resources
33. Select Course extracts from the E-resources menu
34. Searching by topic Use Library databases for authoritative information Excellent if you want to find material or data on a topic, for an essay or research Don’t miss out on the good stuff!

36. Pick Economics from the Subjects menu on the next page. (Business, Politics, History or other subjects may be relevant also).

41. Last top tip Never pay to download an article from an internet site – it can cost £30 or more! Check the Library catalogue to see if we take the journal in which the article appears Or contact me to help you find alternative good articles, completely free
