HPE CONTEXT • 10 HPE teachers • Limited knowledge / understanding re – current Drug Ed pedagogy • Recently taken over Life skills program • Year 8 – Smoking Unit • Year 9 – “Rethinking Drinking” Unit • Year 10 Unit – content based

PROJECT PRINCIPLES • Locate programs within a curriculum framework, thus providing timely developmentally appropriate and ongoing drug education • Ensure teachers are resourced and supported in their central role in delivering drug education programs • Use student centred, interactive strategies to develop students knowledge, skills, attitudes and values
CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK • Health Promoting Schools Focus – mapping curriculum P – 12 • Developmental approach Yr 8 Smoking--- Year 9 Alcohol Ed ---Yr 10 Selected Drugs • Harm Minimisation focus
TEACHER SUPPORT • Need to provide quality professional development • Aimed at developing: • Teacher confidence • Range of facilitation skills • Knowledge base - drug info and resources available
INTERACTIVE STRATEGIES • Need to develop a unit that is based on: • Interactive strategies • Skill development • Student centred learning • Not “Content” Based
CONFERENCE • 7 HPE staff • 2 Presenters – West Moreton Health • Sessions - Full day and next morning • Residential – Saturday / Sunday
WHAT WORKED • Quality time – no interruptions • Expertise – current drug ed theory • Interactive sessions • Wide variety of resources available to access • Sunday morning session – future plans
WHAT DIDN’T WORK • Organise a time that all staff could attend- extra – curricular commitments • Not enough time allocated to unit writing / development
FUTURE • 7 Week – 14 lesson unit developed. • Draft outline utilised • Staff to attend drug ed seminar – Ipswich • Teacher release time given to write unit • Fully resourced Unit produced for each staff member • Unit implemented and trialled in 2006 • Pre and post evaluation completed
