    9. 9 What is Cultural and Linguistic Competence? One of the key purposes of these slides is engaging participants in the development of the definitions of cultural and linguistic competence. We ask why definition is important to stress the concept of common ground which represents one of the major themes of the training. Participants maybe asked for specific examples of their expressions of culture given the diversity of the group. It is important for participants to become familiar with these words and needs of consumers who speak languages other than English.     17. 17 CLAS: National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care Bilingual: A term describing a person who has some degree of proficiency in two languages. A high level of bilingualism is the most basic of the qualifications of a competent interpreter or translator, but by itself does not insure the ability to interpret or translate (Sampson, 2006) Note to Instructor: the CLAS standards refer to National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care. Trainers need to emphasize that worldview components are things we need to learn about consumers and their families.
